Radnor Ring.

Has anyone ridden the Radnor Ring? From what I can tell it's 80-odd miles from Rhayader - Kington - Knighton - Rhayader. There seems to be off road alteratives for large sections of the route.

Anyone possibly up for giving it a go sometime? I'm thinking 2 days, 1 night at a pretty gentle pace.

Re: Go on then ... what tyres?

I quite fancy a play with Nano Raptors but they seem a little difficult to track down at the moment.

I've a WTB Weirwolf LT on the front of one bike - 29" x 2.55, massive but very quick and not stupidly heavy given the size. I belive WTB have stopped making them :|

Go on then ... what tyres?

At the moment I'm really liking Conti' Race King 2.2s on my 29er. Fairly light, very fast rolling, not too expensive and plenty grippy enough. On 26" wheels I seem to have settled on WTB SS Prowlers ... 2.3 on the back and a whopping 2.5 on the front to cushion the rigid forks a touch. Although...

Re: Anyone only cook with solid fuel?

I was surprised in the past just how well solid fuel can work ... given the right conditions and a little care.

Re: Anyone only cook with solid fuel?

@ DNF I had thought about a Ti Esbit or perhaps something along the lines of the thing I made on the WRT blog ... 3g of solid fuel goodness!

I've discovered another ... Mountain Hardwear SL series. Cheapest one's £430 though

Waterproof sleeping bags?

It's always seemed like a very good idea to me but there's not many out there. The only ones I can think of are the Crux Torpedo and the Ajungilak Shield. Neither of them are cheap but they would take the worry out of using a down bag in bad weather ... you also wouldn't require a seperate bivvy bag...

Share your spots!

Ok, I'm sure we've all got a few overnight spots that we love so I thought we could spread the love and share a few locations. I don't expect anyone to post anywhere 'sensitive' or top secret ;) Here's your starter for 10. SN792879 ... pretty exposed. Best suited to spring / summer. Water source clo...

Highest number of consecutive nights out?

This isn't a willy waving contest before anyone starts. Purely out of interest, how many nights have you spent out back to back? ... Think mine is 4, although I recall it feeling like much, much more!

Re: Anyone only cook with solid fuel?

I know the type you mean, think there's one laid about here somewhere.

I'm thinking something stupidly light, maybe carried as a backup for whatever else is used. Possibly even use both at the same time, gas / meths etc for brewing or boiling water and solid fuel for simmering ... we'll see ;)

Re: Cambrian Mountains

Oh yes, an area that's been called my playground! Loads of options depending how much time you've got. Here's one idea. Park at SN798841 and head west, you should end up at SN758847. Now head north on tarmac until you reach SN768874 where you'll pick up a double track on your right. Follow this unti...

Re: Ti frames?

I did see a comment on the web saying that Ti was fine for something like the TD because Aidan was able to get his repaired. In the back of my mind, I'm wondering if steel would have cracked in the first place?

Re: Tarp configurations

@ Bigface ... DNF is right, the groundsheet is formed by folding the tarp. The whole thing is constructed from a single 3m x 3m square tarp ... no cutting or sewing, just folding.

@ DNF ... I'll have a play around with a smaller tarp and see what shapes can be made.

Backpack wearers ... choice or necessity?

Do you choose to wear a backpack in preference to carrying your gear some other way or is it just a matter of using what you have? I noticed that this months WMB has an 'adventure cycling' feature and the only carrying options they mention are backpacks. There's no mention of frame bags, bar harness...

Ti frames?

Is it just me or does there seem to be an awful lot of Ti frames developing cracks? I never recall Ti stuff cracking in the past. Perhaps it's just the recent upsurge in the number of Ti frames out there ... so as a percentage it's no worse than it ever was. It was reading about Aidans cracking whil...

Re: Tarp configurations

I tend to take a pole with me. Don't always use it but it does give you lots of options. Here's a 3m x 3m DD tarp set up with a single pole. You end up covered on 3 sides plus you get a built in groundsheet ... you can also 'drop' the nose of the tarp for extra protection when the weather turns prop...

Anyone only cook with solid fuel?

Just wondering if anyone chooses solid fuel as their sole weapon of choice? I've had a little play around with it before and found in the right circumstances the results weren't as bad as I'd expected. I'm about to embark on another solid fuel adventure so just wondered what other peoples experience...
