Perhaps because it was a first attempt and tried to create a (300km) route between all the points so wasn't much use?

DD Frontline + DD ultralight tarp + Cumulus underquilt = The best sleep ever :-)
Use Google's satellite maps for planning your trip. You can always find couple of trees. Worst scenario - hammock as a (some kind) bivvy bag with mosquito net.
