Nearly finished mountain days and bothy nights by David Brown and it was a great read.

Re: Petition: Ryan's Law: Widen definition of 'death by dangerous driving

Whilst I'm all for drivers who kill or injure people being held more strongly accountable for their actions (or, frankly, accountable at all in a lot of cases), this seems a bit of an odd one, particularly the legal obligation to administer aid. You'd obviously hope that anyone would aid a casualty ...

Top left is the Elie Chainwalk in Fife. Wow, never knew about that. Which is especially odd since I've walked the Fife Coast Path from Lower Largo to St. Andrews. Never would have got my girlfriend near it, and she probably wouldn't have let me go near it either, so it's probably just as well. Will...

Echo what Stu says about cheap Shimano hydros. I had the same problem as him with the ones that came on my longitude. If I hadn't got some bargain SRAM guide Rs I'd have done the same as you. Only disadvantage is having to remember to winding the pads in occasionally as they wear. Can't see that the...

If you believe the conspiracies I'm now a genetically modified organism (*) as well so presumably won't be allowed into Waitrose any longer. Oh the shame. The best bit was rolling up on the Bro...

Yup, the possibility of long covid is the bit that really scares me (from a selfish perspective, apart from the general risk to other people). Reading this rather focused the mind: https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/news/long-covid-a-hillwalkers-experience/ TL;DR Fit, healthy, 30-year-old keen outdoors...

Re: Help me think this through...

My advice would be to save yourself the time, hassle, and quite possibly money trying to find an appropriate frame that will take the components you want to swap over, and the new ones you want to buy, and hold out for a full bike second-hand and sell the old bike complete. I know bikes are supposed...

Re: What are you reading now?

Just finished Exactly by Simon Winchester. The blurb makes it sound very nerdy 'how precision engineers created the modern world' but actually quite fascinating. One or two subjects meh but the rest generally interesting. It starts with how they bored the first cylinders for steam engines on throug...

Left in the Past: Radicalism and the politics of nostalgia . It's a bit academic and heavy-going but it's making me cleverer (more due to having to look up the meaning of every 5th word than the content  ). Need something a bit lighter next - I think Nick Crane's Two Degrees West is on the top...

Re: Clunky fork

Sounds like classic loose headset symptoms as others have said.

But if not, check the brakes - I once spent a while trying to fix what felt a lot like a loose headset, but turned out to be a brake rotor moving slightly (it was on a centrelock-IS adapter).

Re: Trail HTs with lots of mounts for bikepacking

Do you need to limit yourself to something with mounts? Presumably on that sort of bike, in the summer, you're not going to be carrying much kit, so a bar bag, seat pack, and maybe some small bags (possibly a rucksack if necessary) would do? You're not going to want fork cages on a suspension fork (...

Re: "What Is Bikepacking" - according to AK :-)

I’m not sure this is true or even makes much sense: The major difference seems to come down to ethos. Cycle tourists use their bikes as a means to travel and experience new places; bikepackers want to get as much enjoyment from riding their bike over multiple days as possible. Isn’t bikepacking als...

Riding any bike on a non technical off-road surface ...is pretty hard to argue with (no doubt someone will have a go  ). Not sure it helps with the problem, as it's pretty broad, but perhaps that's the point. If it was mixed particle sizes it would be an aggregate, for example type 1. Well, I...

I know walking up a steep hill is more efficient. I know that even if it is faster, the time gained is lost later when I've destroyed my legs.

But you can't beat that satisfaction can you?*
