Re: Cutthroat - worth the hype?

Piece for very valuable info from Mike was to rise my bars higher than normal early - get used to it - then keep it there. I was going to say, I had high-ish H-bars and still wanted them higher by day 7 or so. One thought was 'I wouldn't want drops after that experience' but if I'd set the drop sec...

Re: 9 speed MTB gearing questions

3) Is SRAM 9 speed compatible with Shimano 9 speed? The cassette spacing is the same but I'm pretty sure the mechs and shifters aren't cross-compatible between brands. Could be wrong though. http://blog.artscyclery.com/science-behind-the-magic/science-behind-the-magic-drivetrain-compatibility/ - us...

9 speed MTB gearing questions

I saw an interesting bike for sale that I may well take a pint on. Before I do that I need to get some things straight. It’s a Shimano 2x9 set up. I’ve been using Rohloff for so long I have no clue about the potential options with 2x9. It’s I think 22/36 at the front 11-34 at the back. 1) What’s the...

Re: New member saying Hello & tent advice

Welcome. I've been looking at the DD Hammocks Superlight pyramids/inners and thinking I wouldn't mind having a go with one. I like the idea of pyramids as they give you enough space to sit up (I carry a chair with me quite a bit as my back is a pretzel and I can't sit on the floor for any length of...

Re: Re-proofing Goretex

Yes.
Nikwax Analogy material is designed to work with TXDirect wash in.
It works just fine. I’ve had my jacket a longtime and it’s waterproofing is still spot on.
I’ve had similar experiences as Stu with trying to reproof other shell jackets- it simply doesn’t last past the first ride.

Re: Re-proofing Goretex

Not really. Sticking it in the dryer and getting it warm after treating does seem to help but every jacket / pair of shorts I've ever treated has usually reverted back within a very short while. These days, I save myself the grief and try and avoid anything that relies on a DWR coating. Oh dear, I ...

Re: is a plus bike designed from the tyres up ?

If you have a 29+ frame why on earth would you not want to run biggest tyres possible in it?! :-bd You need Duro Crux's 29 x 3.25. They are bit sluggish on the road but who cares - they look fab and off road the grip is unbelievable. Yes indeedy. I’ve always run the widest tyreon the widest rim (Fa...

Because 3" requires boost?

No it doesn’t.
My old green Krampus is 135mm QR standard with a 68mm BB and runs 3” tyres on 55mm rims (i49mm)
The clearance isn’t super wide but is perfectly adequate for a Dartmoor winter.

Re: Reccomend a 650b Plus Steel Frame?

Salsa Fargo. In the older Frames (?pre 2018) you can squeeze 27+ just about.
On newer models you can run 27+ with no issues at all.

Re: Re-proofing Goretex

I’m using a Paramo Velez Light smock and Velez trousers, bought from Gorge Outdoors online. Not cycling specific but as I’ve said it’s perfectly suited to bikepacking style cycling. Just be aware it will be heavier, bulkier and warmer than equivalent shell jackets. I’m happy to leave the house weari...

Re: Fargo with Jones Loops

Tony - you get first dibs if/when I sell.

I don’t think I’ll need to spend anything to try it out as I have some wheels spare and all the other running gear is on the Krampus.

Re: Fargo with Jones Loops

Fargo is ugly whatever bars it has but as Tony says that’s not the point. With the drops set at off road height I found I only had one properly usable hand position - in the hooks. I think the XL frame is also a little too long for me even at 6’2”, the loops will bring things back a bit I reckon. I’...

Fargo with Jones Loops

Anyone running a Fargo with Loops?
The interweb is suggesting it’s a reasonable idea.
Does anyone have practical experience of this.
I was thinking of giving it a before I let my Fargo frame go. Maybe it’ll make a better all round bikepacking bike than my Krampus.

Re: Re-proofing Goretex

Yep.
When you get over the fact that the trousers look like an 80’s shell suit and use them you’ll hopefully be pleasantly surprised.
I use the trousers next to my skin over my bibs. Comfy for long days in the hills. Great for your average Lancs/Lakes winter ride.

Re: Re-proofing Goretex

Paramo for double duty use.
Not great for warmer wet as Paramo is thicker than most shell jackets. I don’t use mine for roadie road rides but for everything else.
Doesn’t pack super small but very reliable, fixable with needle and thread and the company has pretty good ethics (relative to others)

Re: My Arcteryx experience

Goretex/other membrane liners are very much destined to fail in footwear. If the boot is reliant on it for waterproofing you will end up with wet feet before long. Altberg boots are issued to UK armed forces these days and are popular with most squadies. Less guys buy their own boots than they used ...

Best not tell them you’ve been washing them in Chlorox, they won’t like that idea.

Re: Single speeding a Campy hub?

I've never understood why anyone would ride singlespeed on the road. Fixed yes, but not singlespeed. Firstly I can SS my bike for £25. Fixed involves much more investment. Secondly I don’t understand why you’d wanna go down a long hill with 10-16% grade at 6.30 am on your way to work and not have a...

He has sliding dropouts.

As it goes I’m gonna start with the 38t. I can’t imagine it’ll be too small for the hills and I’d be happy to freewheel down

Re: Single speeding a Campy hub?

Bought the kit. Will go SS on my CX/commuter to give it a whirl.
18t sprocket. I have 36, 38, 44 and 42t rings to play with.
The commute is nearly 50/50 up/down with as much as 16% gradient. No harm in trying it out..... I hope.

Single speeding a Campy hub?

Any idea how I might turn a Campy Record hub into SS without replacing the freehub body?
Don’t see any kits available like there are for Shimano hubs.
