Re: The dodgy tradesmen of old rant
Reminds me of the plumbing in my bathroom before we redid it. First time the Mrs had a "deep bath" (aka right up to the brim) I went into the garage (which goes underneath the bathroom), turned on the light and found a steady trickle of water dripping from the lightbulb. Subsequent investi...

I just googled these things and yes they do look like string vests that men in 1970s saucy postcards wore.

Re: What are you drinking now?
Being easily swayed by a £10 off voucher in the latest Cycling UK mag, and trying to cut down on the booze, I bought a case of Lucky Saint alcohol-free lager. I have to say it is far and away the best non-alcoholic (well, 0.5%) beer I have ever tasted. Unfiltered German-style and without the waterin...

On the subject of malt (whisky) I tried the Lidl £15 Islay stuff at the weekend and to my uneducated palate it's very nice indeed. Maybe this should go in the bargains thread.

Re: TAX on bikes from abroad
I had missed this thread when I posted my question about taking bikes abroad - as I was wondering whether bringing your own bike home from the EU might attract attention to detect precisely this kind of shenanigans.

Taking a bike to EU post-Br***t - any import red tape?
In light of what the government likes to call “the UK’s new relationship with Europe”, are there any issues with taking an expensive bike into the EU (and more importantly bringing it back)? The government website is predictably vague when talking about duty free limits and carnets and such like. Th...

Re: Remembering a mate
Good advice. I have found myself working increasingly long hours lately and never having enough time for family and fun. It's a hard balance between earning enough to live and having the time to do so. Fortunately I may soon be able to cut my working hours in half. I'm sure I will still never have e...

I bought a plastic trowel from the outdoor shop in Braemar about a year ago & although I’ve not used it loads, when I have it’s been good. Think it’s this one, but will only be able to confirm when I’m home laters.. https://www.braemarmountainsports.com/outdoor-equipment/personal-hygiene/gsi-ca...

A modification of Dracula that I like is, sleeping on right side for example, select Dracula, roll onto right side, then move right hand down between your head and pillow such that it's cupping your bonce with the palm heel in your right temple. I tried that but then I can feel my pulse in my templ...

Re: Does it feel like winter everywhere?
Almost 7pm. 18C outside. Not a cloud to be seen. I've just had a lovely ride up to Coire Cas and back in shorts and short sleeves. It's supposed to be warmer the next couple of days. 3 weeks to Autumn. All the clouds are down here. Apparently it’s been the least sunny August on record at Heathrow. ...

Nearly new Alpkit tent arrived today from sqibjib. Put it up in the lounge and seems very quick and easy. Might be able to get out and test it properly in the next few days.

Inspired by Geowizard’s YouTube videos? Seems to have been inspired by a blog post on the Ordnance Survey website: https://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/newsroom/blog/gbs-longest-linear-walk-without-crossing-a-road "So for Great Britain, the longest straight line that you can walk without having to...

Re: Going straight
Inspired by Geowizard’s YouTube videos? He did a straight line across the whole of Scotland… no Cairngorms but he did have to sneak through a plywood factory and across a high-speed rail line, which I don’t think impressed McPlod.

Been there, done that (well, it turns out I hadn't been there ;)) Even more annoyingly, looking at my photos I reckon I did actually just sneak into that tile, as I was definitely south of the church. But I left my bag with the GPS a little way down the hill, and if it's not on Strava it didn't hap...

The Imber ranges on Salisbury Plain were open yesterday. I stopped for a look around the church and graveyard. Should have thought to check where the tile boundaries were, shouldn't I!

Re: OT - Boot Repair
After leaving the boots with bungees and duct tape holding the soles in place the soles seem to be pretty solidly attached using Stormsure. https://i.imgur.com/TxUFnV9.png They are not going to win any awards for neatness - it's pretty messy stuff and hard to wipe off where it oozed out and stuck to...

The square is stuck on 17x17 but I o...

think its was less than fiver per shoe for the loal cobbler to do mine That said they only lasted about 4 rides - but he did warn me it would likely not work Depends on the boot or shoe in question. Many/most modern boots aren’t made in such a way as to allow a new sole to be fitted. The OP’s Altbe...

Re: OT - Boot Repair
One other thing to add - it does take quite a while (12 hours or so) to cure, so you need to put some weight on the repair or clamp it somehow. For the SPD shoes I just wrapped some duct tape tightly around to hold the sole in place while it set. I'll let you know how I get on with the boots.

Actually this post has just reminded me that I have a pair of Brasher boots that have the soles coming away - bizarrely from the middle of the boot, while the front and rear are still securely attached. https://i.imgur.com/liRe9Zq.png I've still got some Stormsure left, so I've just got the tube out...

I have just used some of this stuff to stick the sole back on to my SPD shoes.
