Re: Iceland Divide 2024: need advice on tent, sleeping mat and stove
Sounds alright to me (the Apex 200 choice). Between August and September the coldest nights of 5 trips always were around light freezing. Like 1 - 2 nights per trip across the Highlands. If you tend to use a light weight down or synthetic jacket anyways, you can use it for the coldest of nights to b...

Re: Tyre Patches
I feel for you. Last... probably 10 months were rather quiet. Had perhaps 2 punctures/cuts I could fix within a minute and forget. Then within 2 weeks 3 cuts, all bad enough they needed a spare tube or sewing (at home). Of course I had forgotten to pack patches since I rarely need them. On the flip ...

Re: MTB up - an Everesting journey!
Thanks for the updates Shaf. Why not just try and do as much as you can? No numbers whilst you're at it. Just the feeling. Once you feel sub standard, just dig deeper. Then again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. Etc. Until you can't hold yourself on the bike anymore. Just a th...

Re: Tyre Patches
Perhaps don't use it as a front tyre..?
If the cut was long, keep an eye on it. If it doesn't bulge on the first bunch of hours riding, I'd probably relax and keep on using it as if nothing ever happened.
I strongly recommend using the horizontal mattress stitch

Re: Thunderstorms
So if no better options are available, how about standing it upside down so the metal will have contact with the ground and make a good earth, then make yourself lower than it (sit/lie down). It couldn’t hurt, could it? Same thinking pattern here. Used to do that (where possible) with the climbing ...

Probably about as much good as praying, I imagine, but it made me feel slightly better. What helps me most is to think how I'll be laughing about it in retrospective. This always makes me happy and puts me in a mindset to give not too many sh*ts. I guess with a sort of fatalism (you made the wrong ...

Re: Kayak Oar/Long Pole Carrying on a bike
Whenever I've had to transport something long I've just strapped it to the top tube in two places. Done this with garden tools, 3m lengths of conduit, etc. Put something between if you're bothered about frame/paddle. Same here. I do it with ski's. Lightweight and rather narrow (for powder ski stand...

Thomas Stevens of course. But... I tend to struggle with getting excited by some person who did something. For me, personally, there's only one person I was looking forward to meet (a couple of times) and asked to sign a photo from a mountain I had tried to climb with "Da war ich nie" (I n...

Just imagining how comfy the camp (ride to camp or camp to ride?) could be. Should have underfloor heating.pistonbroke wrote: ↑Sun Jul 16, 2023 3:12 pm I'll just leave this here

I don't think being wet plays much of a part. When Thor or Zeus has you lined up, you're f#%^ed. some believe in physics, some in gods  It was a nice spring afternoon. A small dark front approached from the west. No lightning or rain. Nothing to worry about! But lacked local knowledge. My tre...

Most petrol stations have meths, it's pink, is called Rödsprit and smells awful. Must have a very special sort of additive. Works well though. You'll definately find some in Akureyri. I read that when wind gets nasty it's better to wait in the tent until it clears even better to schedule your ride i...

I have a bit of a fear of thunderstorms, which I discovered on my (road) touring around Europe I wish I was more like that. I seem to function the other way round and keep telling myself it'll be alright, even whilst I'm getting hit by hail, smell ozone in the air and hear fizzles across the air af...

Yes that's the route, no resupply options, so yes, we'll have to carry food for around 11-12 days. Are you planning to walk all of it? You have more than one year time. Enough time to train so much, you could ride it in 3 days if you wanted. Train a bit March - August and you'll easily be ab...

Tent: a free standing one ^ This ^ Pegging can be tricky so a free standing design would be a wise choice, something with decent fly coverage to keep the windblown ash out too I like to say that every tent is just as strong as its pegs. I've been in tents where the fabric tore, but this was because...

Re: Iceland Divide 2024: need advice on tent, sleeping mat and stove
The Icelandic Highlands, through a part of which the "Iceland Divide" goes are currently with temperatures around freezing (eg. Askja and Nyidalur). Make sure to be dressed/have kit to keep you warm at single digit freezing temperatures. Not just warm enough sleeping bag, but of course als...

If I have eg one .gpx file containing POI, multiple routes etc. I can load it all into Connect and all will show up on my device as if they were imported seperately.
May depend on certain settings, but this is how it works for me.

To badly paraphrase the late great terry pratchett, don't run around on a granite surface waving a big lump of metal while yelling "All gods are bastards!". His example was a sword but a bike would probably be just as effective. Pretty much what I did for many, many years in the Massif du...

Yeah, I took a bit of a punt from measurements. The back is fine with about 3mm clearance. Bit daft of me. I’ll check out the gravel kings. Account for frame/wheel flex when under load eg riding out of the saddle. Perhaps put a tape around the closest bits of frame. Ride a couple of times and check...

Inreach owners, whats the battery life like, as good as the secs claim and can you charge it whilst it's in use? Thats' one thing about the spot a set of lithium batteries lasts for multiple days. One charge in 40 days the way I use it, which usually is about 1 message/day and a couple of msgs. bac...

Any insert will get you home faster and a bit safer than a flat without. Without ever tested different options I guess the chunkier the insert, the better it will be for running flat. From the shape I can imagine Huck Norris, Rimpact, CushCore etc. to work better than the more roundish options. Quit...
