Re: New ultra-race secret weapon.

Thats nothing new, I've been using carbon brushes for years. Got them out of an old drill. They're not very good at cleaning my teeth though :(

Re: Highland Trail 2019

Well done Mart, really great effort!

Looks like Steve has timed his run perfectly, I'm predicting he'll be back in Tyndrum for around 6pm this evening. Right into the middle of all the group start excitement.

Re: Highland Trail 2019

Any tips on the best crossing point if water levels are up? Stay directly on the route on your GPS, that's the best crossing point. It's quite scary because it's very wide and the riverbed drops steeply from the bank but once you're in about 2-3metres from the edge, that's as deep as it gets and th...

Re: Highland Trail 2019

I really hope Mart does not have an older GPX file? I fell victim to an out of date gpx on my first attempt which sent me up the impossible track from hell near Oykel Bridge I dont think so - he followed the correct start through Bridge of Balgie. The older route to Poolewe also had the different s...

Re: Highland Trail 2019

Looks like 2 scratches in Fisherfield this morning. Matt M has gone back to the road at Dundonnell and Martin is heading down the old route towards Poolewe.

There are 2 new starters to watch now though.

Yes, but he's heading in the wrong direction!
There's plenty of opportunity for outdoors sleeping without needing to go off-route.

Re: Highland Trail 2019

Looks like an early night all-round today though. MM seems to be settled down in Shenavall, Martin has stopped at Carnmore and looks like Steve may be heading for the hostel up the road from Achnashellach? (can't see anything else worthwhile up there?)

Re: Highland Trail 2019

I thought Matthew Mcwhirr had stopped at The Old Schoolhouse but zooming in it looks like he stopped just over the bridge so possibly the bothy was full, he didn't get there that late. Similarly I though Peter Admiraal had stopped at Melgarve but his tracker shows him bivvying at the road head a fe...

Re: Highland Trail 2019

Looks like Steve wasn't tempted by Shenavall and he'll soon be at "the crossing".
There were flood warning issued for Eastern parts of the country today: https://floodline.sepa.org.uk/floodupdates/
but we didnt get much rain in Inverness so i'd guess out West it'll be fine.

Re: Great British Divide.

Sorry, I mean the actual watershed ... after all, that's why the Great Divide / Tour Divide is what it is. Not simply a matter of going down the middle. That's what I mean, but didn't explain very well. The Scottish watershed does go close(ish) to Applecross on the west coast, but it continues seve...

Re: TransScotland race

They've changed the checkpoints? I've a train ticket for Inverness indended for this but not bothered about a gravel route. If I was, I would have gone for their xduroScotland ride later in the year The checkpoints are different from last year. A road route will be longer but when you consider the ...

Re: TransScotland race

Whats your path from cp4 to 5 as Im sure off road will be slower there? Pretty much due East. Up Glen Arnisdale, onto a small section of the Knoydart trail and over to Kinloch Hourn. Using this route, the distance to Invermoriston is 35 miles, on road only, it's 53 miles. I'm guessing (but I dont k...

Re: TransScotland race

CP1 (The Craigs) to CP2 (Torridon) is definitely a lot quicker off road on a gravel route. Also CP4 (Arnisdale) to CP5 (Dalavich) is quicker off road, don't know the path at all but from the map i'm expecting some hike-a-bike. My rough route plan is around 420 miles. If you stick to roads only, it'l...

Re: Cairngorm loop May 4th 2019

In the email sent out before last year's CL, Steve said: Water courses through flat areas do change, and the tracks on the ground can vary to those mapped to accommodate ground or water changes. So in some cases the GPS track may be slightly off the best line, just for a few hundred yards at most. S...

Re: Veloviewer map - explorer tiles

My expansion west hits the wastes of the Monadliath. That's going to take a bit of effort. Yep, that's my only option for expanding the max square unless I take up kayaking and get the squares I need in the water. The one in Loch Ness is very close to shore. I've tried looking at a few different ma...

My max square is centered around Inverness and i'm missing the same squares as you in the middle of Loch Ness, Beauly Firth and Moray Firth. I can only expand South East.

Re: This is not a Spot (thread)

You can't really compare the cost with a Spot because they do different things. A Spot does continuous tracking so your friends + family can see where you are, it needs a subscription fee because it sends quite a lot of data. That ResQLink is a one-time-use thing (or, preferably, never used at all),...

If you manage to ride to the top of Cairngorm then you'd probably manage to continue on to Ben Macdui which is a bit higher.
