Re: Those left behind.
Do you all always leave your route with someone? Yes. At least one person will know. A person capable of making the right decisions and calling the right numbers should I f@ck up. Also, we often arrange check out times. This can be a bit tricky though and needs careful planning. In many places here...

Re: shimano disc pads with fins .....worthwhile??
Now I have my own 2017 XT brakes I can chime in with own experience rather than watching friends smoking Shimano pads. From the disc rotor dilemma thread 180/160 on my short travel trail bike. It's quite new so I'm just running the OEM Brakes. Killed the original organic Shimano compound on the rear...

Re: Bikepaking round Annapurna (Nepal)
:-bd :-bd Superb. I once travelled up to Jomsom, 4 months after the 'road', or 'jeep track' as you call it, through the gorge was built. A 40 year old Toyota Corolla with a teenage driver, not closing doors, an empty battery, holes in the floor and Spiderman drawing inside the roof. Of course we dro...

Re: Has anyone added extra guys to a Lunar Solo
I was thinking of a horizontal A guy, not a vertical A like Hilleberg use. Exactly, SMD has the door guy inside. I just changed the type of cord and have set the tensioners up with easier to use clips. Elastic cord lessens peak strain in gusts which can help the stackes stay put but also save seams ...

Re: Has anyone added extra guys to a Lunar Solo
@ Alpinium i think the main reason SMD fit the 2 mid panel tie out points is to help with headroom and footroom I like the look of what you have done with the extra guys on the seams. I can't decide which position for the extra tie outs will work best now.....mid panel or on the seams.. You're righ...

Re: Has anyone added extra guys to a Lunar Solo
I know it's not always possible and the wind direction can quickly shift but I always try and pitch mine at 45 degrees to the wind ... wind hitting the corner of the back panel / side. Same here with roughly rectangular shaped tents. A few months ago i seam sealed it using a 50:50 mix of clear sili...

Re: Has anyone added extra guys to a Lunar Solo
The wind really got up last night and it was quite flappy and loud in my Lunar Solo. I already have a couple of guys attached to the 2 side panel tie outs I wondered about adding a couple more tie outs to middle the 2 rear panels. your thoughts ? Has anyone done this ? Cheers I've got multiple patc...

Re: Silk bag liner?
For very frequent outdoor sleepers I fully believe in liners, but stopped using silk as it would last only a year or even less. I often am quite dirty when I sneak into the bag/quilt so I use it mainly for keeping the worst of muck from my down filled lovelynesses. My self made liner weighs a scant ...

Re: Following on from Tony's Highland Trail thread..
The full Highland Trail is well doable in a weeks time for many, given some amount of determination. Maybe for you too? If you don't feel ready now, use the remaining half year to get ready for it and launch in May or June. I did it the first time with no clue of long distance riding or endurance bi...

How many folks have broken a spoke on a ride? (apart from Ben above) I've broken a spoke on a commute (2 at the same time in fact!) but have not had any incidents off road. I once had a rear mech ripped off by the wheel so I guess that could have been worse and broken a spoke? I carry a little zipl...

... I'd always been in the school of thought of no pack and all the kit on the bike. For less technical riding all the stuff on the bike completely makes sense, but I wonder if anyone else switches to a backpack for stuff that's a bit more technical/rocky? ... Re: Pass-Through Bung
Steel. Grooving the top of the steerer? Had thought about that but the grooved spacer on top of the stem does the same job for the less committed! Drilling a hole through the steerer beneath the Stem was my idea. I'm certain a steel steerer would hold up just fine with such a hack. Also, if you're ...

Is the steerer alloy? Do you have spacers under the stem?
You get what I'm thinking about...
Also this is a handy little fellow

Rechaud candles. Not anymore, but I used to usem them quite a lot for solo winter mountaineering. Kept the spirits up in those long, cold and mentally dark moments. And there's me feeling guilty looking at pictures of XC full suspension bikes.... Mmhhh... You know Philip , that Kona Hei Hei D...

Wildcamping in grizzly country, just drifting off to sleep and the crack of a thick branch being broken underfoot. Not my best nights sleep. Ever read the bear bible 'bear attacks' or similar books? Re: New saddlebag time...
I have used Alpkit, Wildcat and DIY. While the Alpkit is good, Wildcat holds stuff really well and stable, at no matter how little or much capacity. Little drawback was the worn through drybag after about 1000 km. I guess the holes came from rubbing meal pouches and relentlessly rough tracks. Was ea...

I live in the Swiss Alps and the steeper the ride, the happier I am. I also like to ride Long downhills non stop. Some of which have more vert loss than the height of highest summit in the UK. Re: 29 x 2.8 Tyre Options
Schwalbe do a Nobby Nic in 2.9 x 2.6, that seems to come out quite a bit wider than 2.6" when on a wider than normal rim like yours. They're a true 2.6" on 30 mm internal rims at (too) high pressure and 2.55" at 1.5-1.6 bar. I see them getting to square on anything beyond 35 mm, also...
