Re: How much climbing on a bikepacking route is okay?

I recall doing a 5000m day on the YD300 back in '16 and thinking 'that was a lot of climbing....' The same day was the TDF 'Queen stage' which had 4500m (on skinny placcy roadie bikes with all your kit in a car - pah!)

Hows about 2000m of climbing and 5000m of descending per day?

The official route goes up glen lochy to miss some a road bashing. Ben lawyers road is shorter and no less climby so better if you ain't set on sticking to the 'official ' route

How accurate/dependable is the data for the Midgie forecast on this site? https://www.smidgeup.com/midge-forecast/ The midges are brutal at the mo and SW Scotland is a particular hotspot so it will just be a case of putting up with them..... If haven't already, get some smidge! Also try and bivvy i...

Pretty cheery for me, first weeks holiday since March and off up north on the Straggler. Nowt special just a couple of days riding up to pals in Speyside, drink some of the local water then spend a couple of days riding back again

Re: OCD question of the week or day

Well I've been running 36/18 SS on my grovel bike recently (just bunged the gears back on in prep for a tour) and I was surprised what I could get up. So you'll be fine Shaff, just practice your single speed gurn on the steeper climbs :-bd

I added a plastic disk to ensure the string doesn't slip down the pole but its not needed. Further away from the tarp the pole is, the lower the pitch

Drop bar risers... Isn't that going a bit too far  I'll let you know! I've got Surly Truck stop bars on the Straggler (30mm rise) and they are ace! Flats now about 20mm higher than the seat level. Anyway, tonights marathon involved the straggs XT rear hub. The freewheel was sounding a b...

In the last 4 months I've noticed an awful lot of old school racing bikes out on the road (including a few really nice ones) ridden by people who have the look of "I've just dragged this out of my / my parents shed and I'm out riding it as there is nowt else to do" So hopefully they will t...

Hmm colour me cynical..... Maybe they are going to pull the plug on HS2 to fund it....

Looks a good route, I've done a few jaunts around Galloway and there is some nice cycling to be had.
One minor thing - the old railway line past Loch Skerrow is a swamp - I'd cut off it on the fire road just back from the loch - this joins the raiders road at Craigdoon.

Sandwood bay as its amazing, no road access and a rock stack.
Kervaig up towards Cape Wrath as its also not got public road access, is also amazing (nice view to Iceland!) and has a nearby bothy if / when the weather is horrible.

Any consequences won't affect them as they are already acting outside the law. Maybe they feel so disconnected from 'norma...

I don't think stuff like that will harm our goings on. Its so gratuitously wrong that our LNT bivvies will never get associated with it. Its the more insidious stuff like people who have fires and leave litter in remote spots, cause damage and bother but don't actually go as far as trashing a car in...
