Re: OMN (Yet Another Post-Viewranger Navigation app thread)
My only real gripe so far is that you have to manually switch between 25 and 50k OS. As.you can have more than one map screen can you not have 1:25 on one screen and 1:50 on the other ? Is that what you mean by manual switch? I was doing it by going to the map "library" and selecting the ...

Re: Yay, it's cheery Friday.
Made up some custom water for brewing coffee with and brewed some coffee. East Angular water is utterly poor show. My life will never be the same again, yet another rabbit hole to disappear down and spend a ridiculous amount of money on. Oh, and more coffee beans turned up... 😬 I'm sure some will p...

Re: OMN (Yet Another Post-Viewranger Navigation app thread)
Doesn't sound odd at all. Is it in airplane mode Do you have a separate device for phone calls Do you use a walking/cycling device as well. Yes. Yes. No. I have a separate phone I use only for navigation mounted on the bar. I've used this setup for years without issue (aside from Viewranger being di...

Re: Bivvy a Month 2024
While the subzero temperatures didn't particularly bother me, and I was ready for some nice clear, dry weather, the forecast for a 15-20mph northwesterly winds put me off my original plan of going back to an amazing spot I found by chance last weekend, at the top of a NW facing hill. From any other ...

Love it
I don't think I'd be getting any sleep in that building
Out tonight for a nice clear, cold bivvy. Forecast -2°C with a moderate northerly... Best take my big coat.

Re: OMN (Yet Another Post-Viewranger Navigation app thread)
Interesting. 22 years  you're probably pretty familiar with it now then  I'd check it out further, but I'm having quite a good time with Memory Map. I went ahead and bought a year's "Platinum" licence (all OS maps + cloud sync), which turned out to be £30... £25 is ex VAT :roll...

Re: Near death experience - > what road/gravel gearing
I've never experienced it badly but the "speed wobbles" are A Thing. The solution, iirc, is to damp the vibration with one leg against the top tube. Not sure a whole new bike is a solution - no guarantee it wouldn't happen with another bike in different conditions, though maybe some frame ...

Re: OMN (Yet Another Post-Viewranger Navigation app thread)
I would feel quite restricted not having access to both 50k and 25k. The detail of the 25k (particularly fencelines) is indispensable for mountain biking IME. The 50k less so, but once you zoom out so far, the 25k becomes a bit useless and you get a much better idea of the lay of the land from the 5...

Re: OMN (Yet Another Post-Viewranger Navigation app thread)
Good to know John. Yeah, I saw there's a perpetual licence option - currently £125 for all the OS maps. Normally I'd rather buy outright than subscribe, but it's a fairly big chunk upfront, and while MM has been around forever, and hopefully will continue to be, there's always a risk (see also perpe...

Shaf, the hose came with my new grey Evoc bum bag, and I think it's just to match the colour. It's not insulated. Will definitely go in one parcel, so just £3.50 postage either way.
Will PM You both, cheers.

Re: OMN (Yet Another Post-Viewranger Navigation app thread)
Here we are again... Several instances of OA losing a recorded track, losing the position signal (big straight lines in a recorded track), and p***-boiling sluggishness in the interface got me back to looking for an alternative before I ended up shelling out more cash for this least-worst option. I ...

I'd be up for that Dave :-bd Edit: Lindisfarne? You're not supposed to wild camp, but people have on the beach. :-bd Lindisfarne could be an option, sure we wouldn't be the first. Would probably avoid in the school holidays, gets very busy. I assume there would be some nice options from Dunbar too ...

Re: Bivvy a Month 2024
I'm not saying I will, but I might. I've always said I won't BAM, but if I happen to bivvy in every calendar month, I guess I might as well claim it, and a couple of good nights out last month have made me think I should get out more often. Justin, we could try one from somewhere between us on the e...

Not sure failed is quite the right word... 200 miles is a decent innings at this time of the year!
Well done anyone who completed or just gave it a good go.

Can't help I'm afraid, but worth looking out for an old Longitude or similar Genesis. Should be a fair bit cheaper than the likes of Surly and Stooge, but nice enough and will do the same job.
Good call BTWI’ve given up my job and planning on heading out to cycle the Baja divide
