Yes, sorry. Nice touch indeed.
Should get my kids to do that with the eggs and honey and what-not they sell at the back door.

Cheery indeed. A simple filter will prevent all of the non-viral problems there. A proper filter or chemical treatment will solve them all. I would contend that catching Hep C from river water is a theoretical risk only - you’d need to drinking water from a river directly next to a sewerage outlet t...

Re: 99p P&P. Joe's shop for bikepacking gear

I’ve just been handed the package containing my bivi from Joe. Very professional service all round with order tracking and a reasonable delivery time. Thanks guys. The bivi itself feels nice and light. It’s packed down to the size of a tall-boy can. It’s not very compressible, so it may end up packe...

Re: multi day trip. self sufficient or local services ?

If it carries on being so dry and it’s a hot weekend more water carrying capacity may be in order. Many small streams on the limestone upland of the Dales will be dry. Same on the Moors I should think.
Dartmoor is bone dry just now - I think the weather up north hasn’t been so dissimilar.

Re: good thermals and a down jacket in summer ?

I’ve tried a few variations of this in the past and not enjoyed myself that much. You really need to ask yourself if sleeping well or carrying little is most important to you. To be comfortable (IME) you need to carry as much clothing as a good sleeping bag would weigh. Muddypete looks to me to conf...

Re: Benefits of exercise vs negatives of diet

I (male 5'7", 50 - 52 yrs) ate a good diet compared to many other hikers of 4000 cal/day and still lost a kilo/month over the 5 months of each hike. We measure exertion differently. Loosing only 1 kg per month shows how tame it is  I regularly find myself on trips where I loose up to 2 k...

Re: 99p P&P. Joe's shop for bikepacking gear

Normal Tyvek (house wrap) is as slippery as an eel dipped in butter. This can be mitigated some by washing it in a machine.
The stuff this is made from - no idea.
My plan is to use the bivi without a ground cloth so, slippy or not, it shouldn’t really matter.

Re: Dartmoor Spring Thing

As you mention it, I’ve been cooking up a Dartmoor ITT for sometime. I thought I’d call it the Dartmoor 200 (km) and hopefully in years to come the cool kids will call it the D200... more of that later.

Re: 99p P&P. Joe's shop for bikepacking gear

The Borah Gear bivi thread peeked my interest and I missed out on Chews used one  but lucky for me and Joe someone directed me to The Shop.... so I just ordered a Tyvek bivi at a very reasonable price. I thought that was worth bumping this thread back onto the first page for a bit more exposure...

Dartmoor Spring Thing

I will be riding out with Shaf, AKA redefined cycles, AKA The Alpkit Ambassador on a bikepacking odyssey - The Dartmoor Spring Thing. The plan so far is this: meet around midday Sunday 16th May and take in a selection of Dartmoors finest MTB trails and bivi spots. The pace will be social but we inte...

Rab Ultralight maybe, but it’s about 3 times the price of an Alpkit - eVent fabric though.

Re: Borah bivy or mesh inner for a Gatewood.

Potentially cheeky stealth ad, but I have a Borah Bivi which might be happy to part with. Would have to dig it out and check on the spec, but I haven’t used it for a number of years, and probably won’t so someone else may as well have some enjoyment out of it. Let me have a think about it before an...

Re: Dartmoor, Exmoor, or Brecon Beacons?

Don’t know anything about Brecon but I do live near Exeter and therefore know Exmoor and Dartmoor well. Both have loads of bikepacking potential. If you haven’t visited (or even if you have) you may think that it’s all about mud plugging over open moorland. That’s really only part of the story. Both...

Re: Fat Fighters 2021

This is something I should look at. I’m totally rubbish at staying at a weight. The addict in me and the obsessive/compulsiveness that comes with it means I find moderation hard to achieve. Over the last ten years or do my weight had swivelled around over 15-20kg. I diet pretty hard and will openly ...

Re: Borah bivy or mesh inner for a Gatewood.

I don’t use a bivi with my Gatewood unless I know there will be very wet, very windy weather - and on these occasions I’m more likely to carry my TNF Mountain Marathon tent. I always use a Tyvek ground sheet to keep my sleeping gear ff the floor. I have the Serenity net inner for my Gatewood and use...

I've contacted whisky to see if they advise me to stop riding them. Its quite noticeable to the feel. I'll certainly be checking for this type of thing more often now. I just rode and forgot about them. Tut tut  I’d be surprised if the company said anything other than to stop using them, wheth...

Re: Yet another light 1p shelter thread

I’m not so sure you ‘need’ a bivi with things like the Lux or DD. I’m a very content Gatewood user and rarely think it necessary to use a bivi in addition. The Gatewood is way smaller than the things you’ve looking at. I do always use a Tyvek ground sheet, cut only a bit bigger than my sleeping mat,...
