Re: North by North West Parts 1 and 2, Audax meets bikepacking.
Recently completed my first audax tour this Saturday and just writing it up. That was only me biviing because it was a three hour ride from my flat and I didn't fancy waking up at 3:30. I live in Stroud so would be a double bivi holiday for me and need to get round for the last train at 8pm Sunday. ...

Didn’t realise other people had done this but not that surprising. I really rated my ride out and the sky at midnight was such an experience. Full write up on the 2020 BAM

Re: Bivvy a month 2020.
This sleep was on 1st January so by rule 2 it just about squeaks in. I have always been dissatisfied with NYE parties, the build up, the pressure to have the best time, getting utterly rat arsed due to the previous points. This year I decided I would spend it in a bivi bag, on a hillside. Folded out...

Re: Grwyne Fawr Bothy
I stayed there a couple of weeks ago. It was snowy on the top so was mainly pushing from the road. Stunning landscape for a walk and the reservoir looked so special for the dusting round the edges. I arrived about 2pm as I had covered ground much faster than expected. About an hour later I hear a kn...

Re: Extreme road rage
I like to think it comes from a lack of understanding. The impatient drivers have probably never ridden a bike on the roads. They do not understand why cyclists don’t all ride in the gutter. They feel entitled to the road at or beyond the speed limit. They do not realise that the slight short hit to...

Re: Carrot/Stick idea.....
A few years ago at this time of year I went down a rabbit hole of research on the psychology of New Years resolutions. Here are some of the bits that I liked hence believed and remembered. Be realistic Be specific Be flexible and forgiving of failures Break it down into smaller time chunks Asses how...

Re: Favourite bike of 'all time'?
My understated grey Orange Clockwork ‘92. Original and best bike. Had it 3x8 with thumb shifters for taking me anywhere and everywhere while at uni, including many trips over the Pennines and Ikley Moore on the slicks it came to me with. This was a simpler time before upgrading for upgrades sake. Re...

Re: On Bikepacking.com
Impressed that a story of this angle is given a platform on Bikepacking.com that I have often been frustrated by stealth ads for their sponsors in their stories. I started bikepacking a seriously poor gap year kiddo budgeting £20/week disposable income which had to cover anything above food and livi...

Re: Do down products degrade over time?
My cosy duvet at home is down and that gets used nearly every day of my life, far more than any sleeping bag, and is not showing any signs of degrading.

Off road ITT purely by written directions?
So I am currently going through a phase in cycling of exploring my limits while exploring the U.K. and would like to try my hand at one of these itts. I will admit that I have not done extensive research yet but I do not want to ride with a gps beeping away at me. All the rides I have looked at seem...

Re: Guardian article re bikes on trains
The Virgin trains I got were usually between Birmingham and London and there are alternatives on that line. As much as is reasonable yes Reg, when I pass the barriers at New Street and the people in the Virgin coats are staffing it, I tell them. They usually look at me blankly or mumble in agreement...

Re: Guardian article re bikes on trains
Agreed it is bad. The train companies see bikes as an obligation and an inconvenience. From a business point of view they are bad. Train space has a value and bikes do not have as high value as seats. Equally, the guard spending time sorting out the guards van is an expense with a bad return. That b...

Re: A dummies guide to pronouncing Welsh
I’m a big fan of the bilingual signage everywhere to make the links. Making a vague effort to learn enough to get by. If a credible job opportunity came up I’d move there in a flash. Every time I go to Wales I get reminded why I think it is the best place in the world, whenever I go anywhere else in...

Re: Quirks, habits, rituals, etc.
If it is looking at all likely that it will rain or be unpleasant weather then I make sure to plough through the first puddle I pass to meet the mud on my terms. After doing this and realising that my toes have in fact not fallen off, I enjoy the weather far more, whatever that may be.

Re: Ride / Race idea.
I agree that we should have events to raise awareness for the gender inequality in cycling, but calling it transexual would be mocking people who identify with a gender different to the one they were assigned at birth. The language and awareness of these terms may be relatively new, but people have ...

Re: Direct me nowhere
Lie your bike on its side and spin the front wheel. When it stops spinning the direction the valve is facing is the direction you go. Or as near to as possible, . Much as I appreciate the absurd image of me doing that and you are probably joking, you could be onto something. Skip the sideway...

Wow! Thanks. Some brill suggestions here. Agree the go down regardless rules could be expanded to now be: Setting sun, steep, pubs if hungry/thirsty, dead ends, BOATS, silly names, and the wind. If we are going for a rule over random at junctions then If listed, biggest distance else if know, smalle...

Direct me nowhere
I am trying to make a set of direction rules that I can follow anywhere I start and turn it into an adventure. I have already got; Gradient percentage signs must always be followed Straight on if an option First turning off a nasty road Veto any tracks already ridden in that direction Within an hour...
