Re: Dartmoor 200. September 18th
Here is a link to the route on RidewithGPS: NEW LINK FURTHER UP THREAD. This version of the route superseded. Hope that works. Feel free to PM me an email address to send the GPX if you want the route that way. RidewithGPS looks to have downgraded the elevation to only  4300m ish. When I worke...

Re: Dartmoor 200. September 18th
This will primarily be a BB200 shakedown so I’ll be looking to push pretty long into the night and do a good chunk of the 200km prior to sleeping. :???: surely "a bb200 shakedown" leaves the camping gear in the car? Tut, tut. You’re supposed to carry shelter and a sleeping bag on th...

Re: Dartmoor 200. September 18th
Nice one. I’m glad to see there’s still some interest in this. I should have been riding the route as an overnighter this weekend but I’ve been pretty sick so haven’t managed to get out. That means I’ll probably up for stopping and sleeping rather than pushing through. This will primarily be a BB200...

Re: Garmin 1030 Plus Mapping Question
Fair point.
The map scale/zoom is adjustable on n30 series Edge computers so in theory you can see as much or as little as you want.
IME it’s still nowhere near as good as a paper map for charging route on the fly.

Re: Garmin 1030 Plus Mapping Question
A further point would be that it depends on the map you have loaded onto the device. I don’t use OS on my Edge or Etrex because i find it way too busy on such a small screen. As I usually have a Route loaded rather than a Track I find the cheap Garmin osm based naps perfectly adequate both for both ...

Re: European Divide Trail
However a number of routes are springing up with the Divide tag which don't seem to follow this requirement. They should really call them "Diagonals" instead of Divides. It's an established concept here in France (joining the corners of the hexagone) where they already have their own orga...

Re: The backlash continues?
It’s a bit of an aggressive move by the NT, but they’re only stating the (mostly) truth. It has to be remembered that the NT is a conservative organisation whose interest lies in protecting its estate for its membership and ultimately us all. I remember them being pretty anti MTB in the 90’s and act...

ledburner, got 3500 miles on my rohloff since i bought it in december. running as sweet as a nut. 7th gear feel a slight bit different from the rest, but that is all. bloody love the thing so far. @Ton + @pistonbroke, thanks for the feed back. WTD: Thermarest Chair kits & Pillow
As per title I’m looking for: 1 or 2 Thermarest chair kits. Of the old school variety to work with a Thermarest Prolite or the even older rectangular “self-inflating” mattresses. 1 foam filled Thermarest pillow. Not enough of these items is causing friction with the kids on family camp outs  I...

Re: Bored of charging my life
The whole reliance on gadgets is a two edged sword isn’t it. I don’t have too much of an issue with it personally though. My watch is analogue and creates its own power through Eco Drive. My Garmin 530 sits atop of a Garmin power pack and gets a good 30+ hours run time. On longer jaunts I plug it in...

Use the right size insert in the original hooks and also use the addition rubber bungee hook that attaches to the ladder buckle in the middle of the back and they rattle hardly at all IME.

Re: Thoughts on waist bags
I just did a 5 day trip using an Osprey Seral with a 1.5l bladder and didn’t like it at all. With the water and bits and bobs it was too heavy and too uncomfortable. Not a winner at all. I’ll need to think again for water carrying and go back to just carrying bits and bibs in my Talon pack and use t...

Re: Leeds to london on canal path?
Having just rode >100km on 3 different canals over the course of a 600km trip my advice would be to choose carefully. I’ve had a mix of wide, smooth towpaths, hugely overgrown towpaths and really awful surfaces. On some sections of the Kennet & Avon it was so overgrown that I was soaked wet thro...

Re: Etrex 22x
I personally find OS mapping on small screen GPS units too busy despite loving the paper maps. For my Garmin I use the simpler OSM based maps and find them more than adequate for follow a crumb trail on trips such as BB200. In addition I’ll have offline OS 1:25,000 for the relevant area in my phone ...

Re: Is there any hassle free way to travel from London to Scotland by public transport?
This used to happen when you could make a bike reservation online whilst buying a ticket, which you haven't been able to do for the last few years, presumably because the technology to do so has been un-invented. ScotRail still use that technology. I had a nice surprise recently and found to ...

Re: Is there any hassle free way to travel from London to Scotland by public transport?
Fair enough. You’d be looking at 20 hours at least from London to Ullapool in that case.
In that time you can get the train from Exeter to the Dolomites - all be it for a considerable sum of money.

Re: Is there any hassle free way to travel from London to Scotland by public transport?
Unless you box your bike coach providers won’t take them as luggage. This isn't true. I recently got our bikes on a coach by wrapping them in plastic sheeting, a friend then got away with bubble wrap on her bike. Someone on here since shared a link showing that coach operators will take a bike if i...

Tell the train staff where you want to get off.Sometimes a bit nervewracking waiting for them to come down the platform to open the door for you from the outside  I did once have to pull the alarm on the train in order to get off at Oxenholme. No one arrived to let me off and the train start...

Unless you box your bike coach providers won’t take them as luggage. The only way is by train * Whilst far from ideal taking your bike on the train isn’t too bad. Provided that you book ahead for a seat and bike reservation the hassle is limited. Know your route and read up about where bikes go on t...

If you can get hold of a copy of Singletrack issue 135, there's an article by Markus Stitz about bikepacking the route of the iron curtain. Is that the Grezstein trophy route on the tank tracks? I heard it was like 100s of miles of rumble strip  Not sure what Stitz did but the Iron Curtain Cy...
