Re: Dartmoor 200. September 18th

Sorry you had a hard time.
I don’t think the mid section of the route would be one to do in less than good condition.
Thanks for coming

Re: Duece trowels

I need a trowel, so was reading through this thread before purchasing. So while it would seem like The Deuce would do the job, it's maybe a tad uncomfortable to use. The Vargo Dig Dig Tool while multi-functional, is rather spendy; it might be useful to carry something that could be used as a burly ...

Re: Ideal Spoke Count

I’m on the 32H J bend side of things. This is for wheels I build myself with alloy rims and my existing 32H hubs - SON and Rohloff (kind of limits my choice  ) One thing to remember that is the higher your spoke count the less dramatic affect breaking a single spoke has on the whole wheel. Ea...

Re: Dartmoor 200. September 18th

On the footpath section at 8am, I saw only 3 dog walkers on the 1st open section between Rushford Mill and Dogmarsh Bridge. All said Hi as I sped past. I didn't see anyone on the 2nd section up to the Hunters Trail. The final run-in on the permissive route was busier but no-one seemed to mind my pa...

Re: Dartmoor 200. September 18th

Thanks Meg. When did you finish? All I saw of you was tyre tracks. You were flying. It was my fault/ RideWithGPS fault that you had the two nav. issues. See the Trips and Adventures thread. The route got changed when I swapped it from Strava where I planned it to RideWithGPS so folk could pick it up...

Re: A Bog Too Far - Dartmoor 200

The turn on the granite way, you have to go about 200yds past the bridge, and then double back up a track up the edge of the siding. You can cross the bridge directly if youd taken the track direct beneath sourton tors rather than dropped to the granite way. I can’t see the other bit you mean on th...

Re: Trail Gaiters

I pretty much always use some. Gripgrabs on my MW7 boots to keep water off my socks or if I’m using my other shoes - Suplest SupTraction or Shimano XM9 - I use some cloth Montane scree gaiters to keep the bits out. They work just fine, aren’t at all sweaty but are a bit fiddly getting on and off. Th...

Re: A Bog Too Far - Dartmoor 200

Forest section was fine. Fast and flowing - no bush whacking required. The river that was thigh deep when we did it had a bank of stones across most of it, barely got wet feet. The streams on the moorland section were both rideable. Much drier this time, which was good otherwise it would have been e...

A Bog Too Far - Dartmoor 200

Always check the gpx…. What happened then? Meg kicked ass and trounced Andy (Roobell7) and me. Pete(68) set off touring. The weather started off poor - drizzle/rain and lots of low cloud and got better. Except when me and Dave were crossing the Bog of Despair. Just as night set in the flag came down...

Re: Dartmoor 200. September 18th

Only a couple of days to go. Weather forecast is not too shabby with the temp set to stay well in the teens even at night, light winds and no significant rain risk until Sunday afternoon. It’ll only be 2 nights away from a full moon and we’ve got nearly 12hours of nighttime. Sunset 19:20 Saturday an...

Re: Bye bye access rights

Contrary to how it might appear, I actually agree with most of the comments posted BUT I don't think we should lose sight of the fact that this began as a conversation about the NPA response to the immediate problem of anti-social and blatantly cockish behaviour. Yes, maybe they could take a differ...

Re: Hydration vest for bikepacking

I’m thinking about a backpack with bladder for the Tour Divide next year. I need to be able to carry 4-6 litres at times and can’t fit it all on the bike. So far the Ultimate Direction ones look best, they’re light and have pockets etc, but I need to find some local suppliers so I can try them out ...

Re: Dartmoor 200. September 18th

Route starts at Steps Bridge car park. We’ll be able to leave cars there overnight but it’s a public car park in the middle of nowhere so usual risks apply. If I snuck into Haldon or went to Cranbrook Castle to camp I’d drive to the start in the morning to avoid having to ride up another hill after ...

Re: Dartmoor 200. September 18th

There are a few actual campsites within a couple of miles of the start I’ve that’s what you want. The best option probably being at the Teign House Inn which is only 3 flat km from the start: http://teignhouseinn.co.uk/teign-house-inn-camping-2/ You could always park at the Steps Bridge car park and...
