Re: Wildlife

On a similar theme to Stu's Martens, some time ago a couple of beavers were introduced to the Forest of Dean but unfortunately last year the female disappeared, presumed dead. A new female was brought in during January this year. They obviously got on well almost immediately because recently they ha...

Re: Get off the f#=÷*^ pavement

On the BBC today. A woman gets 3 years for the death of a cyclist. Watching the video clip, I really can't see why. Although obviously, if she wasn't there, it wouldn't have happened. And the council still can't confirm if it is a shared ped/cycle path. Very clear that it isn't. Something dodgy the...

I went to a little place just under the flanks of the Black mountains called Craswell for a meal at the Bull with a friend on Sunday , afterwards we went for a walk to recover . Great ride V :-bd Some of the cycle trails in South Wales are very worthwhile, I've ridden out from Pembrey to Mumbles on 4 along the coast before now too. Re: WRT stories

Judging by the number of Boners we met going the opposite way to us it would appear that our anti-clockwise loop was less popular than a clockwise loop. Of course, at the speed I travel we were never going to catch anyone up but to be fair we were only overtaken once or twice.... Riding with Kevin (...

135 odd km ridden and 2700m climbed Remarkable coincidence (or maybe not  ) but we did 135km and 2916m climbed. Also a lot of pushing, or lifting and even dragging in some places. I think we saw more sunshine than you by the sounds of it  Will put together a write-up when time permits.

Re: Black Mtns to Glos via FoD - good/quick routes?

:-bd Any other route between Monmouth and Abergavenny is seriously hilly, and there don't seem to be ANY bridleways at all until you get to the Skirrid. Were you going to tell James to stop for lunch at the Red Door in Mitchel Troy too? Yes, there are a lot of little lanes but very few bridleways i...

Re: Black Mtns to Glos via FoD - good/quick routes?

I'd do this - all on tarmac: cycle lane through Gloucester and west to the A48 / A40 which can be followed to Highnam and you could then head for Tibberton and follow quieter lanes to Huntley and on through Blaisdon, Flaxley, Then Cinderford - Cannop - Coleford - Redbrook - Monmouth Then NW through...

Re: Black Mtns to Glos via FoD - good/quick routes?

... I don't see many good E-W routes if you're passing through between the main cycle route along the Glos-Sharpness canal and the Abergavenny-Crickhowel area. From Glos-Sharpness canal are you talking going north through Gloucester or south over the Severn Bridge? I'm guessing via Gloucester? From...

I always reckon you can knock 2 or 3 degrees off the general forecast temperatures if you're going up into the hills for the night.
And another 1 or 2 if you camp by a stream in a shallow valley.
High possibility of condensation this weekend given the conditions?

I love guide books. Well, good ones anyway. As a tool for research if visiting an area, as a guide to an area, even just as something to flick through and let my mind wander. One of my earlier ones (and still a favourite) is Mountain Bike Guide Mid-Wales & The Marches by Jon Dixon, published by ...
