Re: ROVANIEMI 300

Chuff me, that was hard!

Headlines; 2 days 6 hours 7 mins. 3rd place. More than half the field DNF’d due to the conditions.

Longer version: you’ll have to wait a bit, but I kept a video diary so you can see first hand the gradual deterioration of self as the race evolves.

Still going. Kuusilampi section was v tough with fresh snow fall during the middle of the day. Punctured just before Porohovi 2. Got a bit of a twinge in my knee, but nursing it round. Not done yet!
Riding with Tobias, too.

Thanks folks.

Minus 14 here this morning, but warming up to above zero with snow flurries by tomorrow night. Going to be interesting conditions to race in.

Re: FatBiker question: where best to source 45NRTH

I have the Japanthers, and had to go up two sizes to get a good fit. Normally a 41, ended up with 43 as they were right over the top of the foot. Might be worth sizing up.

Re: Tell me about budget turbo trainers.

I picked up a Tacx Vortex smart trainer on Gumtree for £120 and have been happy with it. I hadn’t used a trainer for years until recently, but having a screen to look at while you ride (even if only a phone) with a little dot moving over a satellite image makes it infinitely less mind numbing than w...

I’ve entered the Rovaniemi 300...

10th anniversary BB200/300 when the time comes.

Not much else planned, but wondered if there would be any interest in a group start on the Cambrian Trail?

Twixmas in Wales

Did a quick search to see if this had been mooted already, but didn’t find anything.

So, anyone up for a trip out to a Bothy some time between 29th and 31st?

Count me in. Haven't worked out where "where" is yet, but I have plenty of time to work it out :) With a bit of an unforeseen diary clash, I can't make the official weekend now - apologies. Was looking forward to meeting a few new faces. Planning to head out this weekend instead, and as I...

Re: The 2020 Yorkshire Dales 300 & 200 event

@Lazurus  — I’ve did the 300 a few years back more or less in one go (short nap in a deck chair outside a closed cafe at 6am). It was a week after the HT550, so quite close in terms of being on form, but it went to plan. It’s hard due to distance and amount of climbing, but not hard in the same...

Re: Food and Drink intake - what's yours like?

When I did my two Everesting rides, I worked out I consumed 9000 kcal’s per attempt so 1 kcal per metre ascended. I haven’t worked out what I ate on the BB200, but it probably falls into the not enough category. On the bonk; only ever happened badly once, while on the way back from a long ride at Un...

Re: Padded shorts: yay, or nay?

I’ve got on well with Troy Lee Designs Skyline shorts, mainly for their well vented panels on the front of the legs and the fabric has a nice feel that doesn’t chafe.

Re: Bikehike alternative?

I was going to suggest https://wtp2.appspot.com/wheresthepath.htm, but that site has faced similar restrictions to bikehike. I bought into Route Buddy a good while back, which gave me access to 1:50k OS maps switchable to google aerial on MacOS, where choice was limited. However, it’s at least 4 yea...

Re: Padded shorts: yay, or nay?

Dave - I've spent a lot on shorts in the past - usually decent ones such as Assos, but others too. For short rides, they've been fine, but it's the longer time in the saddle where moisture builds up in the pad that it becomes uncomfortable. It all started when I increased the frequency of my commute...

Padded shorts: yay, or nay?

I took a big gamble on the BB200 this year, and that was to not wear padded cycling shorts. On previous long rides with 10+ hours in the saddle, particularly in the wet when wearing waterproof shorts, chafing has been an issue that needed managing carefully. I put this down to overheating undercarri...

Re: A different sort of bikepacking challenge

Is the fitting likely to have stayed the same for 70 years? :o That said, I can hunt around for vintage versions. I do have a different crank with a smaller 44t ring on it, but I would need to change the cottered bb axle to accommodate it. If you think modern BB standards are complicated, the world ...

Thanks Taylor - useful info.

Pirhana - It has a 3 speed Sturmey Archer with overdrive, thereby giving it 6 gears. Cutting edge for 1949 :-bd

Ozboz - yes, me too. Plan is to take my two kids as well and make it a three-generational ride.

Good luck keeping your permanganate of potash dry for long. This was one of the things that I didn't know what it was, so I looked up. Used for cleaning wounds, so effectively superseded by alcohol wipes. In fact, pretty much everything on the list has a modern day equivalent of some sort. Apart fr...

Re: A different sort of bikepacking challenge

If you did go that way then I'd possibly look at following NCN 68 through Bellingham to Wooler then take the B6525 to Bowsden where the line of hills between Wooler and the coast fades out and you've an easy ride to Holy Isle. Thanks Bob, I've just plotted a route that has done pretty much that. I'...
