I’m surprised this hasn’t generated more replies as there’s a lot of love for the El Mar on here. I’ve got exactly the same as you’re selling here, and it’s just lovely.

Re: Longshot wanted - Jones Ti Truss fork, 135mm QR

I was just going to post here too! Definitely give Five Land a shout - I’ve had my Jones repaired twice and they re-did a weld on another bike. It isn’t cheap (mine was £200+ on the fork) but the repair is brilliant. Details of both repairs on my Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/p/B2l65mmF4LE/?u...

Re: HT550 2021

Well, that was a pleasant read. Thanks Landslide for filling in (some of) the dots. I accidentally had my tracker set to ping in my Check Ins only. Then after I'd started the event, Trackleaders wouldn't update the settings. I tried to check in as often as possible but it didn't always transmit in ...

Re: Vee Tyre Co Trax Fatty

Rubbish tyres. The Mezcal that came up on offer recently is much better and sizes up the same, even though it’s nominally a 2.6”.

I have used a 3.25” Vee Trax Bulldozer and it’s alright but I don’t have a fork wide enough for it now. It’s heavy but gets through a lot of stuff.

The dot watcher stopping, was that the fact dot watcher pulled the plug early or was it the riders had X amount of days to finish and those outside the time, dot watcher stopped tracking?
IIRC there is no cut-off time for the group start.
Alan G originally said 8 days.

Re: Highland Trail 2021... What worked, what didn't

Forgot to add… Didn’t work OS maps app, not once. Despite supposedly ‘downloading’ all the maps I needed for use offline. What a pile of crap that app is. Luckily I had ViewRanger as backup. Well done for completing it! The OS maps app has a fatal flaw - check whether you’re storing on iCloud or on...

I’ve heard the Breck Epic in Colorado has a whiskey and bacon stop. A shot of whiskey and some American (i.e. disappointing streaky) bacon to replenish your salt and alcohol levels

Andrew and James finished overnight. Josh is on the home straight, I think he's got a chance of sub 4 days? It's much tougher to be further down the field, you're on the go for much much longer plus every night you spend out you don't get as good a rest as you would at home so the fatigue builds up...

Re: Scottish gas canister logistics

I have a backpacking trip planned which takes me into the proper wilderness of Scotland. Due to work and other factors I'll need to get a plane to Glasgow to make it happen. I'll land at 5:15pm on a Friday and then need to be on a bus at 6:45am the next day. In between these hours I need to buy gas...

Re: Bikes (or rigs if you prefer) of the HT550

2019 really was a show of ‘go fast or go home’, with dangerously low levels of kit taken. It’s good that there is the insistence of a prudent set of equipment. I did 2017 without a stove, but had a meal at the Oykel Bridge (x2), pie shop and Whistlestop cafe. If there’s any question of places being ...

I’ve thought about sewing in a new seat area into a few sets of worn ones that I own. Maybe get some cordura and experiment to see what works best for them. If they’re going in the bin anyway…

Re: Downloading Maps of huge routes offline to Mobile Phone ?

Make sure to disable cloud storage if you’re using the iOS OS app. It is (or hopefully was) a fatal flaw that offline maps download to iCloud, so when you try to access them with no network coverage you can’t.

I have some Kent Eriksen Sweetposts that I really rate. All picked up for good prices - found two on Singletrack and another from a mate. They’re so comfy that you think you’re running a flat tyre, and I doubt I’d ever sell them.

Re: HT550 2021

A thing I always think about - some very fit people have failed, some (comparatively) unfit people have succeeded. Nous and keeping a level head are more important than fitness. This was discussed at length in 2019 by all of us waiting around in Tyndrum. My personal theory is that people who know t...

Re: I’ve finally found MY (almost) perfect way to stay dry

I’m a convert to the Outdry jacket. I got very cold in one on a Cairngorms Loop attempt but I think this was down to me expecting it to be another layer based on the breathability of previous jackets. The fit is poor though, far too short with no drop tail, so if you wear it off the bike anything in...

Re: ever wish you were strong enough to ride single speed ?

I owned two El Mariachis previously (one rigid that ended up singlespeed, and a full bike I got for a very good price). They were sold when I had my Stooge phase, then I went to Jones. My Orbea became top bike, so the Jones went singlespeed but I couldn’t justify leaving it anywhere at all so wanted...

Re: ever wish you were strong enough to ride single speed ?

I’m now up at two singlespeeds, but have basically stopped riding my Jones. I built a Salsa El Mariachi up and it’s so much fun. 29+ up front, wide bar, short stem and 34:19 - it’s absolutely perfect for my local loop. My Jones is now 30:19 and I’d consider the CL on that. My real reservations with ...

Re: New GPS ideas please.

I have a USB charger for 2 AA or AAA batteries that I got from IKEA for around a fiver. It would be interesting to see if I could fully...

Re: 29+ Tyres Vanished?

Those 2.6 Mezcals advertised on here are excellent - I’m surprised how well they fill out an i45 Scraper. Like many though, I’ve got a stash of 29+ tyres which I’ll work through:

Part-worn Knard
Unused 3.25 Bulldozer (doesn’t fit in my Jones)
Chronicle
Mezcal
Vee Trax Fatty, which belongs in a bin.
