Yeah, my WRT will be a 5 day trip so it's worth bringing a little extra I reckon.

Re: Shoes

I'm planning on bringing crocs for the WRT this year (depending on space and weight) - they should be ok for rivers too as they'll dry quickly. I don't mind having wet feet while riding, but for hanging about in the evenings it's pretty unpleasant.

Yes, the Owayo jerseys are very good - I've got three. Looks like I'll be getting another one soon too.

Re: What GPS?

One advantage to using the etrex range (old or new style) is that there's a fair bit of info out there (try here: http://www.aukadia.net/gps/ to begin with) on setup and use of the GPS for cycling. They also seem to be fairly robust and Garmin's customer service is good too. The etrex screen might b...

Re: Welsh Ride Thing 2012

I'd be sorely tempted to get a cheap GPS such as one of the low end Etrex units, you can get the H for £61.25 "used" from Amazon (so that's ££ not £££ :D ). http://www.amazon.co.uk/Garmin-eTrex-Handheld-GPS-Navigator/dp/B000PDV0CE/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1336719405&am...

Does have 1:25k but you only get a little section of map and no route plotting facility.

Re: Shock Pump & spares

Dunno about shock pumps, but for spares it depends on length of trip.

Some, all or none of the following:
Spare cable (brake and gear if necessary)
SPD cleat + screws
Spare M4/M5/M6 screws + nuts for rack/bottle cages/seapost etc.
Cable ties
Gaffer tape

Re: Welsh Ride Thing 2012

Just spent a very enjoyable afternoon plotting my route: 200km, 5500m of climbing, about 60/40 split off/on road and 13 of the GRs. Also passes the cafes at Lake Vyrnwy and Coed y Brenin and the chippy in Dol. 8-)

Mine too. 2.4x2.8m, according to the specs. Maybe a bit big, but loads of room for one and just enough for two.

It depends on rim width. Sheldon Brown has a useful chart about 3/4 of the way down this page: http://sheldonbrown.com/tire-sizing.html

You guys need to take up audaxing. Being able to feed yourself effectively in a late night petrol station becomes second nature and you'll soon learn to put up with anything. Personal favorites are dark chocolate, peanut M&Ms, Frijj/Yop, pork pies, bananas, apples and wraps instead of sandwiches...

I quite like the Mammut one - it doesn't slip around too much and is reasonably comfy but does squeak a bit. I'm not bothered about the weight, cos a good night's sleep is worth it, I reckon. Nicer than a dirty dry bag stuffed with sweaty lycra, that's for sure.

Yep, I'll be going anticlockwise too - probably over two nights. Leave Rhayader Friday afternoon and stop somewhere E of Llanbadarn for the night. Looks good, thanks. Was thinking of following the Trans Cambrian Way from Rhayader to Knighton, down to Kington to ride Hergest Ridge before heading west to Llandrindod via Llandegley Rocks and back to Rhayader.

+1 for the Rab Generator or PHD Minimus vest. Vest is half the size, warmer on the body but obviously doesn't cover your arms. Generator is a bit bulkier but will keep you warm even if it gets wet.

chris - a bunch from Derby Mercury usually do some stupid distance to the York Arrow. One year via Welshpool. We're not going for stupid distances - our shortest possible route is 405km, the actual distance we'll ride is about 425*. Current Easter distance record is 564km by VC167 (a club officialy...

And I'll disagree completely. :D I found that BB7s needed constant tweaking to keep the pads running at a decent distance from the discs, and that the rear was much, much worse then the front. The pads seemed to wear incredibly quickly (though this was in Cannock's winter grinding paste). My current...

Does it break at the same link each time, or in different places on the chain? Is it at the links you've riveted back together?
