Decathlon is often my first port of call - they were out of stock when I looked so ended up with a £50 Rab down to £30.

Re: Why do manufacturers stop making good kit !

Tenn MTB overshorts were only £20 and even though they only lasted one winter, fair enough at that price. Company now gone bust and remaining stock at twice the price on ebay! :o

Re: I was cold last night

You don't say whether you have used a silk bag liner. While are pricey (£30-£50) they are generally regarded as adding a degree or two to your bag for little weight or carried bulk. They also keep your bag cleaner for longer and reduce frequency of washing down - never a simple operation!

Re: what is the highest rideable road in the UK?

In terms of tracks actually going somewhere, rather than to a dead end Munro summit (no disrespect to riding up to Munro summits! ), I would offer the shoulder of Bynack Mhor on the Lairig Loaig, which is around 830m if I remember correctly and very rideable from Ryvoan direction. Also Bealach Dearg...

Re: Dropper posts

I'm in the same boat: after decades of avoiding full sus and dropper posts, I've just got a new bike with dropper and yes, straight away, I'm thinking of how to adapt the dropper to bikepacking, especially as i'm 5'7" and running a M frame with 29 wheels so there is only 24cm from tyre to under...

Re: Dropper post question

Cheers guys, especially Scott for the replies. Hopefully it will never happen, but just good to know.
I always carry a hoselock anyway ever since the day I destroyed a lever type (not allen bolt!) seat collar in the middle of Glen Affric.

Dropper post question

May seem a silly question but .... if cable from the handlebar control to the dropper snaps during a ride, does the seatpost remain at the highest height or does it drop down to the lowest? Mine is a Fox Transition as I suppose they may all behave differently.

Re: Scottish route advice for April

The Cairngorms could be fine in the Glens and possibly even some of the Bealachs will be reasonably passable up to 750m if you don't mind a bit of pushing and/or there hasn't been too much snow. The best routes in the Cairngorms involve river crossings and even if the rivers aren't high from snow me...

The best solution to obtaining a perfect fit windstove for the 8g stove is to plead technical incompetence and hope that a nice person takes pity on you. Worked for me  :-bd

Re: Highland Trail 2019

Great Glen Way open shelter thing I've heard vague rumours of this, but never seen it or even know where it is. I'm presuming it's not immediately visible from the trail. I can remember coming across a locked toilet, nearer the Gairlochy end of the Great Glen that required a special key to gain ent...

Re: Cairngorm loop May 4th 2019

I went past it in September and there were some signs of recent work - some shoring up of the wall and removal of a fireplace at one end. It’s an ideal site, I’ve stayed in it once before on a Loop attempt. It was much nicer than being outdoors in a storm, but as a proper bothy would be great. Yep ...

Re: Cairngorm loop May 4th 2019

I was in the Cairngorms a month ago and the head honchos of the MBA had just met with the landowners and other relevant parties to discuss the proposed new bothy at the Geldie Burn. It probably won't be a usable bothy by May, but should certainly provide a good option for the less bothy-rich second ...
