Re: Highland Trail 2019

Left it late with planning my possible re-supply stops. I see from past race reports that the Drumbeg stores opened especially on a Sunday for the front runners. Do people know if this is likely to happen again? Otherwise, it looks like Kylesku hotel is the only place that's likely to be open betwe...

Re: Etrex 30x or Wahoo Elmnt ROAM: A vote

The major consideration for Etrex is the long battery life and ability to use AA. I've no idea if the other one has this. But if you're going far enough /remote enough then I don't see any other option.than Etrex. They do have their glitch problems. This can be somewhat overcome by saving a gpx of y...

Re: Pillow recommendations

Mammut Air pillow. Very light - I think this and the Klymit Xlit 3/4 mattress are just a little over 100g combined. Obviously more comfortable options

Re: Capital Trail

Good ride by you and Cath, Bob. So what's the score with the bothy? I've never passed by, but was under the impression it was always open. If it's locked, then surely it's really just another estate hut and not really a bothy. :???:

Re: Cairngorm loop May 4th 2019

Some of my route (blue, trying to follow the "official") showing: * First image is obvious path to the narrow metal bridge, it was dark and blindly following the official loop bit was nuts! * Me and Stu Cowp did the part through towards Glen Feshie in daylight a few years ago. The gpx app...

Re: Cairngorm loop May 4th 2019

Agree Colin, there's been a lot of change to the landscape there in the last 10 years, what with the bridge being washed away and then the glen itself changing considerably due to flooding/minor landslides. You're right about the estate too: they have invested in a good path network and I seem to re...

Re: Cairngorm loop May 4th 2019

Out of curiosity, how many folk follow the CL GPX route through Glen Feshie rather than the line past the bothy at Ruigh Aitchechan, the new(er) crossing of the Allt Coire Garbhlach (the one that was washed out 3 years ago) and the newer track at Achlean Farm? Seems these are the commonly used opti...

Re: CL 300 attempt in winter

The Fealar loop is very tough, not only physically but psychologically because you are deviating off the obvious route, which you don't really do anywhere else. Perversely, if the route was run in reverse, you would just drop down from Fealar and continue up the Tilt. You would also have a relativel...

Re: CL 300 attempt in winter

Well done Philip. However you do know that it's the months of Dec, Jan and Feb that come under the heading of winter and March is officially the first month of spring I think I said that I wanted to complete within the clock change of British Winter Time. It was definitely winter conditions. Sorry....

In defence of .... Garmin!

While you may argue that a very sporadically used, 1.5 year old Etrex 20x shouldn't suffer a catastrophic failure (repeatedly powering off after 20 seconds, despite all the usual precautions of changing batteries etc.), what happened subsequently in terms of Garmin UK's customer service has certainl...

Re: RedShift ShockStop stem, thoughts?

I presume this suspension stem is a contemporary re-hash of the Girvan Flex Stem that very first appeared on the bike of the Raleigh MTB team in 1990. If I remember Paul Hinton was the very first rider in the country to get one. Anyway, suffice to say they were short-lived the first time around .......

Re: Medical cirtificate of fitness?

Due to an amateur cyclist having a heart attack in a gran fondo many years ago, amateur cyclists in Italy are required to present a "certificato di idonieta'", basically a certficate obtained from a doctor who has watched you pedal slowly on his indoor exercise cycle for a couple of minute...

Re: Marking inside a titanium pot

Interesting. :geek: Alternatively, using the 400ml pot, add the noodles then fill with water to about 1.5cm from top, then bring to boil with lid. You don't need to do any measuring. Also if you are heating 300ml of water in a 400ml pot e.g. to add to a dehydrated meal, 300ml is about 1.5 cm from to...

Ride more in the Highlands. If water taken direct from a burn (whether neat, filtered or boiled) doesn't loosen you up, then nothing will.

Re: Loch Ericht West Shore?

The west shore of Loch Ericht is fine riding (although the one time I road it my freehub gave uo the ghost and progress was tricky), HOWEVER, that last km to the BAC from Prince Charlie's cave is along a tricky, banked rocky path that is quite tricky to push a loaded bike (or any bike!) through. How...

Re: Kings House hotel to Rannoch station track

Hi yes I know this very well!!! I quit out of my HT reccie last year after just 4 hours and made my way to Rannoch, not really expecting to get a train back to Tyndrum. I took this track, the map is pretty much correct. I remember about 2km 3 absolute max in the middle that is tussocky/boggy semi-pa...
