I'd rather keep my bikes in the house and have my wife threaten divorce on a weekly basis, than keep them in the garage.
Garages are for cars and lawnmowers and other low value junk.

Re: Knoydart Misadventure
I came in and out of Knoydart a couple of years ago on MTB - did not use the ferry! Road along Loch Arkaig, then the normal Glen Dessary (or Disarray as I prefer to call it). Soon after A Chuil the path becomes unrideable and stays that way all the way to Sourlies. Pondering on nuances of rideabilit...

Swap bearbones ultralight 8g stove for 22g stove.
Hi the 8g stove is great and works perfectly but through my own silly fault it is a bit too small to heat the alpkit 650 Ti mug. The 8g will work perfectly with the alpkit 400 Ti mug - that's what it's intended for. So I'm looking to swap my 8g stove with someone who isn't using a 22g stove. ...

Re: Shoes recommendation
Agree with htrider, the Shimano mt 34 is performing well for me so far. I liked it because of increased reliability of no laces. There was a more expensive version with potentially more grippy vi ram sole for walking but this had a pull lace system a la salomon, which I found consistently unreliable...

Have spent more time there than my living room this winter and pad wear is very low as those remote forest tracks are cleaner than country roads in winter.

Re: Todays ride
Just got back from 3 day raid to the Northern Highlands. 12 hrs driving and twice that in riding. On Monday I got to Contin by 1400 and road the 73km on the HT route to the Schoolhouse. I stayed here the night and was actually up at 0345 before my 0400 alarm. Riding with a 80 lumen Petzl by 0440 thr...

Re: Do real men have Highland Trail fears?
Midges can't fly faster than 3mph? It might be a little bit more. I remember at the end of a long day riding from Iron Lodge the last stretch to Maol Bhuide and they were all over me. I admit I was riding slowly up hill on the granny ring, but I was moving. Had to put the midge net over the helmet!

Re: Do real men have Highland Trail fears?
I remember your write up of the ripped tyre wall, Ian. Here's my multi-step tyre strategy: 1) recently converted to Maxxis tubeless tyres, they didn't have 29x 2.2 so ended up with 29 x 2.1. 2) stans tyre sealant inside tubeless 3) https://www.evanscycles.com/innovations-tubeless-tyre-repair-kit-EV1...

Do real men have Highland Trail fears?
Here are three of mine (as a first time rider in May 2016): 1) The Northern Loop. I love a bit of Scottish Wilderness (Knoydart, Glen Affric and especially Atterdale), but I probably love these place because I'm never too far from a familiar bothy. The Northern Loop, on the other hand is a big, ston...

Re: 2016 Highland Trail route.
I think there is a second version post-Nov that has a tiny alteration to the approach into Fisherfield. Alan has sent me it but I didn't receive the email with V2 so maybe worth just dropping him an email. PS nice to see HT rising back up the BB forum - I thought everyone had forgotten about it!!!! ...

The higher the maH value the better, I managed to get some AAA 1200 a few years ago and they are still working well. Try ebay and general googling.

Re: A bit of a nerdy question!
Hi there. I hope I can help. I don't have Garmin, but satmap. With satmap the mapping software will NOT run with Chrome and I have to use Firefox browser, where it works fine. Maybe try this.
Cheers

Re: West Highland Way
You'll need more than moral support when it comes to to the Loch Lomond bit between the wigwam campsite (North) and Rowardennan (South). Not pleasant and actually a bit dangerous in places trying to lift your bike up over horrible slippery massive boulders. The rest is pretty easy and rideable, but ...

Lone bothy / no bothy
Did anyone else get a bit excited about the perfectly located "Lone bothy" near Achfary ..... only to do a but of googling and quickly discover it's locked!

Re: Shimano shoe sizing.. help!
Sorry to add to the confusion ... but my intentions are good. I always take size 43 in proper Italian cycling shoes and I find that that is what I take in Shimano too. I have a pair of Shimano in 44 that I deliberately bought larger for fitting sealskinz underneath and these are fine for that. So fo...

Thanks very much Scot Routes. Have you got an etrex? I'm down for HT550 and ANOTHER button has just fallen off the satmap this weekend so I have no faith in it's reliability for this event. I think the etrex has been replaced by the dakota? But Im happy to go with etrex as they seems to be the gps o...

Re: AK mytimug 400 or 650
I got stem cell and 650ti mug from alpkit for xmas. The 650 fits in the stem cell. It is a fairly tight fit but not unreasonably so. I haven't taken measurements but they do fit and alpkit says on their site that the 650 is designed to fit in the stem cell, so if you have probs get back to alpkit.

Re: Cairngorm loop grp depart 2016
If for whatever reason the road bridge between Invercauld and Braemar is not open, the passing by Quoich becomes a necessity, not an option. A lot can change in 4 months and hopefully the original route can be ridden.

Re: Cairngorm loop grp depart 2016
Some interesting points. As I understand it, The Bridge of Dee next to the Invercauld Bridge is a private bridge on estate land. I have always seen it with the full height gate across the end of it locked. Will have to hope that an alternative arrives for the main road bridge at that point. Failing ...
