Good point SS. Isn't the xr2 supposed to be the lightweight option over an xr4 team issue... Is the team issue almost as fast? Mezcal is probably above my budget as they tend to remain higher priced? Are they strong enough for rocky trails!? The xr4s are like Velcro on the road in comparison to xr2...

Just to confuse the tyre issues Shaf - have you also considered profile, tread pattern, shore rating and obviously air pressure? Much more to it than width. Totally agree with this E.g a 3.0” xr2 will be faster rolling than any width of maxxis minion A 2.6” mezcal will be faster than pretty anythin...

Having spent years studying wind forecasts for the purpose of surfing and finding decent waves, the wind is rarely the polar opposite to what is forecast, it’s far easier to predict than when it will rain, snow, thunder etc

Was the forecast wrong or something?

The wind is pretty easy to forecast for a window as narrow as 26hours, was there not a weather window?

Yes had slightly more clearance than your modern gravel fork on a 700c tyre, a-c on a 27.5 mtb one is about 440mm. I ran 700x47mm tyres on it

I got round a similar challenge in the past in something remotely resembling a gravel bike by using a 27.5” mtb carbon fork from AliExpress. The a-c was only a tiny bit longer than a modern gravel fork, that needed a straight steerer too
