Re: helmet, yes or no?

There's a cool innovation that looks like a scarf but is an airbag that deploys around your head - like what the neck and chest/back braces they have for motorbikes and horse riding

Good idea, don't know how well it works though

I could definitely survive without a stove, but I enjoy it more with one I find hot food warming for both body and soul and hot drinks more so My gourmet meals aren't really that gourmet For the Ford Fiesta this year we had Filet steaks for dinner with single malt and rum, then bacon sarnies for bre...

Re: explain to me this terminology..

It used to apply to bikes very well, but is increasingly harder to apply with the need to further differentiation for marketing purposes I it used to be MTB style upright comfy position with thinner, bigger road wheels. The name doesn't really work so well as a category, apart from hybrid literally ...

Re: Newbie Hello! :)

Dropper and a seat pack still work fine, although maybe not ideal This is my Cotic Solaris with a Rockshox Reverb dropper and a Revelate Viscascha. Dropper function still worked fine, wrapped some material (chamois from the car) around it to protect the post for any rubbing What's the bottle mount?...

Re: Light, compact camping knives

I rate the Bantam Alox, it's a brilliant SAK, and is only one backspring wide so it's pretty small

It's a very unobtrusive thing to carry

Re: Light, compact camping knives

I don't think the UKPK is that great for bikepacking, it's overkill

The OHO isn't necessarily needed and you can justify a locker for a bikepacking trip if you wanted to.

Mine is sitting unloved and unused. For bikepacking I'd rather have something smaller and lighter, or something more robust

Re: Light, compact camping knives

I have a very healthily sized knife collection, but all my bikepacking needs are covered by a Leatherman Wave, I find the pliers handy, and a more useful size than a Leatherman PS4 or P4 The Wave, for bikepacking, is a better multitool than something smaller like a Leatherman Juice or Victorinox Han...

Nice pics

Definitely A - learn how to use the tarp properly.

A bag can't really breathe if there's water on the outside, you need to give it some help. A more expensive bag might help a bit but not much, plus knowledge/skill is free!

Re: bike use musing

Rigid might be the most popular, but bikepacking is either about getting out and exploring on a bike, or letting you continue the ride for that bit longer

FS bikepacking means you can do both of those so crack on

All my bikepacking has been on a hardtail, its my only MTB

I keep ground coffee in a ziplock bag inside a freezer bag (if I don't take the big 250g bag of coffee)

I use a GSI ultralight filter java drip thing with it
