Re: What lights?

I bought a cheap light from Planet X (I imagine it would have originated in China), it was ok for a few months then started to play up. To be fair to Planet X, they offered a refund or replacement so I took the refund and bought a mtb batteries light which has been great. I don't think it's worth go...

Shaf, is the basin definitely ceramic and not hard plastic? Wasn't aware of any cleaning products that would wear down ceramic, that's all.

Thanks Jay, I'll make sure I fit one. Better get three actually as the washing machine and dishwasher haven't got them either. :-bd

Plumbing advice please

Currently fitting a new bathroom. The paperwork that came with the W.C. says it requires a double check valve on the supply. It used to be that if you had a 20mm minimum gap between the top of the overflow and the supply outlet it was enough to guarantee no backflow, is this no longer acceptable? I'...

Re: Organised bikepacking trips? Or anyone interested in small group ride

As has been said, its worth having a night or two in your garden. It feels safer and it gives you a better idea if your sleeping bag and mat are going to be warm enough. It's what I did. Also I think it's worth being flexible with the weather, you can get lovely days in the middle of winter, as long...

Re: I saw a hedgehog!

A few months ago my missus said to me, "Sort those rats out in the back garden". I asked why she thought there were rats so she showed me some droppings on the patio. They didn't look like the normal liquorice comfit shapes that rats leave, bit of googling and it turns out it was a hedgeho...

April actually Reg, on the WRT. Immaterial now anyway as I'm dropping out for a bit. Just got too much on at the moment, nothing to do with the colder evenings, honest!

Good luck to all the remaining BAM'ers.

Re: Open access land you're not "allowed" to access

Thanks for posting this BrownDog, I've got an open access wood a couple of miles up the road from me and never realised. It's got a bridleway running along one side that I've ridden once before so easy access as well.

Might set aside a couple of hours tomorrow for some exploring... :-bd

Re: Patagonia - Earth is now our only shareholder.

Barring a miracle, (electrical generation using nuclear fusion maybe?) I think we are probably screwed. But it's worth pointing out that Yvon Chouinard is one of the good guys, he's been buying areas of Patagonia and making them into protected parks for years. He also lets his employees go surfing a...

Re: Pile / Pertex and the moon on a stick.

I actually find my paramo velez smock to be like a cooler version of a Buffalo windshirt and properly water proof to boot. Obviously a miss price wise but they come up second hand quite a bit. I also have a buffalo tec-lite gillet - micro fleece and pertex outer which is fab as a warm but light thi...

Re: Mapping software

I've used the premium version since February and am happy with it. Can't really compare to anything else though. I really like exploring with 25K mapping, at home and while I'm out so it's worth it for me. I've made a few routes with it and not had any real issues. I had a little dabble with Basecam...

Re: For those who read and enjoy history.

Over the last couple of years I've read every single article in the 'News and Reviews' section. It's a great place when you are doing a bit of research/need information/can't be arsed finding anything productive to do. I bought a sleeping mat, sleeping bag and shelter partly based on what I've found...

Re: What are you reading now?

The ending with Rose of Sharon feeding the old man the only thing she had left I'm thinking nail and head there. They were willing to share to the point where they had nothing. It's been at least twelve years since I read it, maybe it's not so much anti-capitalist it's more showing the downfalls of...

Re: What are you reading now?

East of Eden - John Steinbeck … such a great writer. A great writer, I love "The Grapes of Wrath" Grapes of Wrath is a great piece of anti-capitalist fiction! At least the first three quarters are, then it seems to lose momentum and it feels, to me at least, as if Steinbeck doesn't know h...

Re: What are you reading now?

Finished The Book Of Trespass last night, first book I've read for ages (just the lack of time). Really good, proper eye-opener. I've seen it mentioned on here before so I expect quite a few have already read it, but if you haven't, it's recommended.

Re: Which suspension seatpost? Experiences/Recommendations

I had a USE suspension seatpost on a 2004 Specialised hardtail. It did take some of the sting out of the lumps and bumps, but I don't think it had any damping and it would get really annoying as you were trying to pedal while pogoing up and down. I read a group test article that said the thud buster...

Re: What does / would your 'ultimate' shelter look like?

I don't think that they need quite as much floor space as the Lunar Solo does. (Quite possibly wrong here, let me know if so). I've never had a night in woodland as I've never found a place big enough to pitch, but it's easy to find places where I could imagine a tarp would go. So I may try a tarp ...

Re: What does / would your 'ultimate' shelter look like?

I'm fairly pleased with my Lunar Solo, although the first couple of times I used it I didn't rate it at all. Now I leave at least one door tied back and both if the wind doesn't shift. Using the mid guys also help especially when it's windy. Be interesting to see how it is in winter. If conditions l...
