Re: 26' Race Kings
Used to have them on the back of my 26" SS. I liked them (have a few still in the garage looking for a home if you want to try them on the cheap, PM if so). Really fast but little cornering grip on anything damp or loose, to be expected really from a tread like that.

Re: Hello. Bearbones newbie - saddlebag question
Hello.. ) I wish I'd got a WC Tiger earlier, well recommended. Really good design, adaptable and more secure than the other std stuff-bag type I have. Maybe not the best for a huge load, but it's not the best place for a huge load either.

Re: Coping with extended wet, cold conditions - hands and fe
Useful stuff.. thanks. I do have to get off and walk at times, either SS-defeated or to warm up the feet, it works. I think all the usual things like good base layers, eating well etc I do already (lessons learned from outdoor experience in general). I followed a few tips here and found buffalo / sh...

Re: Your favorite alpkit goodie?
My frame bag, one of their early / pre-production try-out versions that's looking fresh after around 2000 miles of use and stood up to ham-fistedness that's wrecked a few rucksacs. MyTiMug - one for all, that and a popcan stove is all I use on short trips now. Their drybags also seem to be totally t...

Coping with extended wet, cold conditions - hands and feet
Wet, cold hands/feet can be crippling. I know how bad it can start to get and that nothing can keep you dry indefinitely, but after being particularly badly frozen for most of an 8hr ride this winter and getting a reminder of how fast it can happen when unprepared today, I wonder what good 'in case'...

WTD - Paul Comp hinged thumbie mounts or similar
Need a split/hinged clamp barend shifter mount, single or pair, with or without shifter units, not too fussed. To buy or can swap / PX for some Forge-SJS thumbie mounts in black, BNIB.

Re: How much does your bike weigh?
Dunno what my steel Jones weighs.. it's 'reassuringly sturdy'. But the frame and forks aren't that heavy, 7.3lb. Spec varies and it weighs whatever the total is, I'm used to it and there's no pointless weight on it so I don't care / know. I guess 27lbs or so as a SS, 29lbs with gears at the back? My...

Re: Tyre Recommendations
2.5 is big but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I go for the biggest tyres I can if it's relatively firm ground, only going down to 2.2 in the wet. A bigger tyre can be used at a lower pressure for more comfort and lower rolling resistance. Makes more difference n a loaded bike than unloaded. The...

Re: What do you eat while riding?
Cereal / oat bars, whatever has lower fat, or flapjack. Soreen. Brown bread jam butties. Eccles cakes. Dried dates. Chocolate raisins. Jelly Babies. In rough order of long>short term energy. Savoury things for 1, 2x a day on a long ride seems to be good. Had cravings for fatty protein on multi-day t...

Re: Bivvy a month for 2013
The highlight of the trip was at 01:30 this morning when I found myself up in a tree in my pants armed with only a headtorch and leatherman as a huge male boar nibbled on my handlebars :) Great post.. I was woken up by a boar in France once, didn't know what it was at first, I moved, something larg...

Re: Placating the other half.
:) Could be worse Ray.. I went climbing in the Ecrin a few years ago. A simple, straight-forward route took us out of phone reception for a couple of days, as would most in that area. By the time we'd walked back to La Grave my mate's wife had called MR, French local police, the bureau de guides and...

WTD - OH placater, AKA Spot tracker
Solo trips and a stressed GF means I'm after one for a ride this summer. Either a hire or S/H, just to see how it works as they're not cheap as a speculative buy.
Anyone got one unused to sell or loan at a fair rate (damaged=replaced of course)?
Thanks

XTR 985 double chainset, little use / pics, and BNIB XTR FD
M985 double 28-40T, 175mm, used for a few 100 miles then went SS on a triple chainset. Some marks to LHS arm but pretty good cond overall. BNIB XTR front mech (top swing double) for it available. Got too much 9-speed kit to make it worth keeping the 10-spd XTR, thought I'd be nice on a road tour/cx ...

Second bivi kit q of the night.. Midges and mosquito avoidance at minimal weight. If you're at risk of being eaten some nights but generally prefer a bivibag and minimal tarp set up, are there any 'midge sack' type products? I'm thinking of a sleeping-bag topper that's just a roomy mesh half-bag but...

I have 2 lightweight tarps, one uses a line-lock like this - http://www.arrowhead-equipment.com/uploads/6/6/5/1/6651357/9879460.jpg?218?1314328 They're great. I can do the right knots for tarp set up but when tired / cold I like my tarps to go up easily with minimal cases of Mr Tourettes the Tarp Ri...

Hoses are 1m front, 1.7m rear.
We spec 95cm and 1.6m on 29ers as OE from Shimano so they're a bit longer than stock as pictured here http://www.evanscycles.com/product_imag ... n-bike.jpg
