Re: Highland Trail 550 - 2018

When we did the Northern Loop last year we found a 24hr honesty shop at Glencanisp Lodge that we never noticed anyone had mentioned before. There's a kettle, tea, coffee, cans of pop, some food & even ice cream in there. Could be ideal if there's nothing open in Lochinver & peeps are pushin...

Re: Sonder Camino AL

£200 seems a hell of a big difference just for brakes. Are you sure there aren't other technical/spec differences too? I've always had XT hydraulics on MTB, but my Genesis road has TRP Spyre wire actuated. I would say wire is about 20% of performance of hydraulic - and that's after I pimped the bloc...

Re: Scotland at Easter

Knoydart? :o Are you trying to get me divorced! Really not recommended with a bike. A few years ago I came in from Loch Arkaig > Glen Disarray [sic] > Sourlies. Then out over a memorable pass that only had a single width path through thick heather so there wasn't much room for me walking beside my ...

Don't laugh ... but: any new of the Corrieyairich pass (750m).
It may figure in my early April plans.
I can remember pictures from HT from 3 years back when there was still some snow on the pass at end of May!

Trump steel and aluminium tax >>> bike prices?

I'm rather surprised that nobody else has posted something on this .... so I will. First off, does the 25% tariff on steel and 10% on Al include products or just raw material? :| Scenario 1: you have a US bike manufacturer who is buying in ready welded Al frames (or even fully assembled bikes) from ...

Re: Drop bars on a 29inch hard tail mountain bike ....daft i

Its not the speed you're travelling that counts, but the effective airspeed; speed of the air against you combined with your forward speed. I'm not sure what the difference between "the speed you're travelling" and "your forward speed" is? Its about apparant wind though isnt it?...

Re: Drop bars on a 29inch hard tail mountain bike ....daft i

The unpopular answer is: Aerodynamics don't come into play until an object is moving forward at a speed above 20kph. Drop bars were designed to go on road racing cycles to provide more hand positions that flat bars and, more importantly, improve aerodynamics. How many times on a true off-road ride w...

Re: Rear facing seat tube slot - why?

Copper Slip / copper anti-seize compound is readily available from motor stores and is often sold in a handy toothpaste-sized tube. Use as a matter of course with alloy seatpost in steel or alloy frame. It is not suitable for bearings but should also be used for: pedal axles to (metal) cranks, the t...

Re: HT550 film

Joaquim did the HT massed start in 2017. I believe he had an agreement with Alan that the external film man could film him, but there must be zero outside interference. I saw the camera man waiting for Joaquim as came to the end of the Loch in Glen Lyon and then later by the road before Wolftrax, bu...

Re: New stove, it's very dull though.

I agree with much of what Matt has already said about the BB ceramic wool stove. Here's some extra details - fresh from the garage - where I've just been out to test it. Weight is 15g for a very compact design around similar size to the 22g stove. The bloom is not a clearly defined as with the 8g an...

Hoping to contribute to this, but I’m not sure Mrs padonbike had the chance to get to post office today to collect an interesting item. I’ve even obtained a thermometer from a science teacher so can measure pre and post heating! :geek: I recently tested the 8g and 22g indoors with 20 ml meths each h...

Rich, I keep telling myself that every ht is my last ever so why buy a spot just for a few day’s use, but then I keep entering and keep needing to grovel around for one to use at the end of May. As Matt says it’s fairly easy to add a second ID to someone’s Spot (although as each year spins around, I...

Ah, very interesting. How's the size Stu in relation to the existing 8g stove and the 22g?
And you've mentioned to me before about the need for some insulation from the ground for best results - I presume the wool is addressing that? :-bd

No fuel around. Visited once in the dead of winter with quite a weight of peat bricks for the stove. It was 3C when we we arrived and still 3C after we had burnt the bricks 4 hours later. I have since learnt that coal offers a lot more heat for weight than peat bricks!

The lightest, most comfortable, warmest option is merino long-johns. If you think you would feel self-conscious wearing just these is a bothy with strangers, a pair of lightweight running shorts over the top solves that.

I recently experienced buying a Klymit Inertia XFrame from amazon and I must admit I was pleasantly surprised by what happened. Although the Item was listed on amazon.uk it was quoted as £30 and would be sourced from amazon US. Amazon said they would estimate import costs at £7 and refund if less, b...
