Re: July Scotland trip

Scotland = Midges so be prepared for them, and in July they will be out in force. I was going to try and bive up there for 2 weeks, but have gone for a tent to either keep the midges at bay if its sunny, or have more room if there is heavy rain for a few days.

Re: Outer Hebrides

Think everyone is going to Scotland this summer :) I've been trying to find offroad options in the outer hebrides, but there doesnt seem to be any, and most of the roads just go to nowhere, so just a bit of a road trip on that section. There seems to be a few more options on Skye, but not much. I ha...

Camping it Up

Who else is camping over the night before the WRT?

Wondering if its better to sleep at home, and then have the 3 hour drive over in the morning, or to come across after work on the friday, and have a leisurely satuarday morning.

Re: Supertanker of Meths

Thanks for the ideas, just need to weigh up the options. The last thing I want to do is carry too much meths, from a packing size/weight/safety point of view. Theres also the hassle of trying to find sources enroute, as I have enough hassle finding it locally. I'll be taking enough other stuff with ...

Supertanker of Meths

Got the WRT to look forward to first, but after that i've got my 2 week Scotland trip to think about as well. Route and gear are comming along nicely, but cooking seems to be an issue. How easy/what type of places could i top up enroute? Carrying 2 weeks worth seems impractical (more than a litre fr...

Re: Welsh Ride Thing 2012

Plan A Anticlockwise taking in most of the GR's east of the A494 and the 800m sumit Plan B Clockwise taking in most of the GR's south of the B4391 Also have the option of combining the two if the weather is dry and i want a ch...

Re: What GPS?

Bar mounts ok, but interested in the above inner tube mod. How does that work? I find the GPS locks fine into the holder, as long as you do it right (had it bounce off down the road once when i hadn't done it properly) The issue i always had was fixing the mount to my bike. Just using the cable tie...

Re: What GPS?

I have a Garmin Dakota 200. Very similar to to Flatfishy's one. It has a smaller screen, but the bateries last longer (replaceable AA), so it depends on what you're looking for. The bar mount from Garmin is terrible, but with a bit of old inner tube you can make it work better. Batteries will last a...

Re: Welsh ride thing 2012 route help

Use something like this http://gridreferencefinder.com/# to plot on all of the grid references that Stu sent out, so you can get a picture of the 'shape' of any potential route, then just start to link up the ones you like the look of, until you get a route you like. Plotting your own route is half ...

Re: Welsh Ride Thing 2012

For me the best part is catching snippets of stories at the finish, some of the best don't involve riding miles and collecting every GR ;) I remember the lockin/Wendy house story... From the top of SJ 075341 there are 2 decents westwards from the peak. Is one more fun than the other, or should i ju...

Peak Bank Holiday Trip

I dont live that far away from the Peak District, but for some reason a rarely ride there. Its usually Calderdale, the Dales or Lakes if i'm getting the car out. May's adventure Part 1... Always prefer point-to-point adventures, especially ones that finish back home. Had friday off work so decided to make the most of it and loaded up the bike and rode to work. After work its a short ride into town to catch the trail to Manchester to ride the Trans Pennine tr...

Re: What size is your tarp?

I'm the same as Anthony, 2.5x1.5 sil tarp.

Spent yesterday night under it, and found it a bit snug. Not sure how it would work in heavy rain. 2.5x2m might be the best compromise over packsize/shelter space

As it happends i'll be in Sheffield tomorrow morning/afternoon, with the bike. I have tomorrow off work, so tonight i'm catching the train from Leeds to Manchester, with the plan of riding back to Leeds via the transpennine trail (it goes straight past my house), to test some new kit and get some mi...

Looking to make my cooking setup a bit smaller, as currently i have 2 cups. One for cooking and another to have a brew while my pasta/cous cous rehydrates. Re: Who here has done the St Bees to Whitby C2C?

I did it 2 summers ago and it was great fun. We were lucky with the weather and did it in the last week of a 6 week dry spell. It took us 4.5 days self supported, staying in Youth hostels, and just carrying a few extra clothes for an evening, while the riding kit dryed out/got washed. We followed Wo...
