Re: Summer is dead - long live Autumn!

TomOrrow!! Me too, 2 nights and 3 days of bivi bonanz. My first multiple night bivi; planing to do a lot of the south downs way, ending up in a pub in alfriston. This is also a test to whether I might be up for the bb200. by the way, every time I go for a bivi it seems to involve party behaviour. Ar...

Re: Wet the bed.

Ahh I see. So the main difference between the superlight and the soul seems to be the top fabric. eVent v's Endurance 10D 3X DWR.

I will add the soul to my wish list and delete the superlight.

Re: Which Mat....

I bought an inflatable mat for about £20 and it was really poor. I then spent about £100 on a NeoAir XL from thermarest. It is very comfy for side sleeping, light and packs down to about 1ltr.

Re: Wet the bed.

The Soul eVent looks interesting, I was considering a MLD Superlight as it zips up fully (like the Soul) however has a small moon shaped air hole to keep condensation low. I notice however the Soul has no breathing hole! Have you used this fully zipped up in wet conditions? Aren't you at risk of suf...

Re: Anyone using a softshell?

Been reading this thread with interest as I need a waterproof shell. I was considering a Rab Latok Alpine or a Rab Demand. The Alpine seems more bulky, although I like the full length zip. I found a Latok Alpine XL for £140 (RRP £210) if anyone is interested? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RAB-LATOK-ALPI...

Re: Life cycle of a bivi beginner

You're on a slippery slope now that you've got the scales out!
Not wrong there, I weighed my bike without any kit and it came to over 30 pounds!

Re: Life cycle of a bivi beginner

I bought an interesting bit of kit from an inflight magazine the other day - baggage scales. This really helped me to get to grips with reducing my weight. http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/2659/img1204nm.jpg I have also managed to get my volume down by switching to a more summer bivi set up. Before ...

Re: Life cycle of a bivi beginner

Had another nice bivi session. I knew it was going to be hot and dry so I went with as little kit as possible. I purchased a summer down bag and another smaller tarp, as my Alpkit pd600 and DD 3x3 tarp are so bulky. I ended up sleeping on a slope, wedged against a small mound and without a ground sh...

Re: Life cycle of a bivi beginner

Am I Soft? On my last bivi I set up on what seemed like flat ground. I realised however that I have been lucky to have found true flat on past occations: I spent the entire night trying not to roll off my mat. I ended up changing the position of my bed about 4 times and in the end abandoned my grou...

Re: Life cycle of a bivi beginner

Hey Nathan, cheers mate. I couldn't make it on friday, hope you had a good bivi though? My week started off quite grim however I had a bivi plan! This was my view at 2pm on wednesday afternoon: on my way to a meeting in central London.. Pure hell. http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/5343/img1209am.jpg ...

Re: Life cycle of a bivi beginner

First proper Bivi completed.. Epic! Trip report: I meet up last weekend with Deano (the guy who introduced me to Bivibiking) on the south downs. He had just riden 8 miles XC to get there, I had driven as close as I could get then cycled up a tarmac road.. I was starting to worry at this point about...

Re: Life cycle of a bivi beginner

Just spent £100 on a thermarest neolite and £130 on a Rab infinity down jacket. Have I lost the plot? The jacket can't even get wet & I live in England. Wtf?? I know what's coming next.... New bike? At least the optimal bivi bike isn't full sus. That would be expensive!

Re: Life cycle of a bivi beginner

First Bivi completed. I am lucky enough to live next to Laughton Woods, so I headed out at 8pm and was back by 7am, before the wife and kids were up! I managed to strap a saddle bag and bar bag on, however the saddle bag hit my legs and was not that secure. Need a better solution. My backpack was t...

Re: Life cycle of a bivi beginner

cheers guys. cutting down weight is actually a lot more critical than I expected. The bowl is for the dog. My theory was wet food weights the same as dry food plus the water you need to rehydrate. Also milk weighs the same as water plus powdered milk. Therefore take nice foods stuff and less water. ...

Re: Life cycle of a bivi beginner

My attempt to start out with entry level kit has come unstuck. I never considered how bulky the cheapo stuff would be. I think my wife is going to inherit a synthetic sleeping bag that weighs over 1.5kgs: I will be purchasing a nice expensive down bag sooner than expected... The bivi bag looks good ...

Re: Life cycle of a bivi beginner

Ahh yes, bike fashion. My trek was the dogs bollocks back in the 90's, when it had Judy XC's, front and rear V brakes (new technology back then!) and grip shift. The only original part left on this bike is the frame! So I thought I should focus on the Bike aspect today and hit the trails for the fir...

Life cycle of a bivi beginner

I recently met a guy at a party who is bivi bike mad and we spent a few hours over more than a few beers talking about the minutiae of bikes, gear, managing weight, water purification, routes around the south downs etc etc. He had is kit set up in the garden as he was staying for a few days. It look...
