what is this black magic??

My rear hub has quite a bit of play and so have been researching how to replace the bearings. I now understand about sealed cartridge hubs, cone spanners, freewheels and pawls etc by watching loads of youtube videos. However when I went to do the job on my wheel it was like nothing I have seen anywh...

Re: compatibility woes

So.. the reason the 1x11 wasn't working on the new frame was because the derailleur hanger was bent.. Took 5 minutes to fix, once I got hold of this special tool thingy (I didn't know this tool even existed until today) https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4240/35511240725_2e32bbf797.jpg Untitled by SW , o...

Re: compatibility woes

Yes I think chainline issues are the thing here. There is a spacer in the BB that I hadn't noticed. Having now done some research I didn't realise the chainline was so sensitive. Anyway, I had hoped this would be a quick easy job but now am rethinking the whole approach here. Why am I putting a 1x11...

Re: compatibility woes

the whole 1x11drive chain is almost brand new. It feel like I am running a 10spd shifter with 8spd cassette - gear jumping all over the place, difficult to tune. When riding in the largest rear cog, the chain is at such an aggressive angle it is grinding on cog and the jockey wheels. Thinking about ...

compatibility woes

Long story, but I am trying to fit a 1x11 drive chain to a hybrid frame and it is rejecting it. Seems the BB to rear axel measurement is 420mm on the hybrid, compared to the 450mm on the frame it came from. I have shortened the chain which helped however it just isn't running smoothly enough to even...

Re: Endurance / overtraining / fuel

Thanks for all the quality responses. I can see my issue now. Every time I get on a bike I get all type-A about it and go as hard and fast as I can for as long as possible. I actually had to stop using Strava a few months back as I was so obsessed with chasing KOM's that I started to worry about hea...

Endurance / overtraining / fuel

I surprised myself on the WRT, riding double what I thought I could (5hrs/10hrs/4hrs back to back). In the months leading up to the WRT the longest rides I'd done, although intense, were all under 4 hours and always followed by 2 days of much needed rest. That said the WRT did leave me feeling broke...

So that was you that we seemed to be passing in the opposite direction repeatedly?! And the CX rider was with us: the LHC Splinter group.

Re: Things I learned on the WRT

1. It is possible to do the WRT on a CX bike however it it's likely to get damaged. Not from the trails but from being thrown by a frustrated rider called Alex. 2. If you just keep peddling you will get there, even if you weigh 19 stone and your bike weighs similar, as long as you smile constantly l...

Nice one. See you there.

I've managed to get an early escape from work on Friday so hope to make it to the Star Inn well before closing for a few beers.

That is pretty convincing. Thanks for your advice. Plan B it is: heavy Mr. Bounce. Wonder if I can do better than third heaviest this time around.

Re: Carbon disc forks

Yes I know, such a rip off and a waste. I could just take the other bike - but I can't get over the fact I've invested so much time getting this bike set up just for the wrt - and it was running so smoothly. Perhaps I should cut my losses and right off the frame and consider myself lucky I'm not hav...

Re: Carbon disc forks

Think you have hit the nail on the head. The frame is a medium with a short post, adjusted very high to suit my height. I have probably been mistreating it. Good to hear you think the weld will get me though the WRT. I'll do the weld to take the time pressure off finding a new frame - and get a fram...

Re: Carbon disc forks

Whoa.. going on a SS is a strong move. It has three gears right: standing, sitting and pushing?

My plan B is a full sus, which will be comfortable but very heavy.

Re: Carbon disc forks

Hi James, I appreciate your help with this build - your advice was spot on for the headset. Since discovering this crack I have been focused on finding a welder. The welder has quoted me £60. So now that I know frames can be got new for similar money I am quite pleased. Thank you. The only issue wit...

Hey Reg, You have a point, it will likely be quite busy at the LHC stand next Saturday. I am proposing the below image as the logo for the LHC splinter group (provided Barebonesnorm doesn't claim copyright infringement) - I will be wearing this on a T-shirt so you can spot me easily. :-bd https://c1...

WRT - feel free to join us (LHC splinter group)

Hi, I am looking for a few more riders to join our small team for the WRT. With a great deal of generous support from Bearbonesnorm, I have built a route that is technical, remote and avoids roads as much as possible: including a few secret trails that are not even on the map (assuming I can find t...

I have maps saved to the phone's memory. I've tested it in Sussex. I have plenty of (heavy) external battery packs. iPhone wins, thanks!

Re: Garmin advice

Agree. Having spent £££ on iPhone device with GPS I'm reluctant to fork out another few hundred for a Garnin unless there is a solid reason. Anyone got a view on the reliability of iPhones to get a gps in remote Wales?

Re: Garmin advice

I can't decide whether to get a Garmin for the WRT. I have a modern iPhone with all the OS maps and associated cycling apps but the main issue as far as I can tell is battery life. (I've got external battery packs though). Can anyone comment on the reliability of an iPhone to acquire a GPS signal in...

If anyone else is looking to join a last minute LHC splinter group (doing under 100 miles) feel free to send me a pm and I'll send you the route details to review.

Re: WRT2017 LHC dating agency

I've put together a draft for a slightly longer route. So far it's maybe 3-4 of us looking to ride a longer route. Hey Mark, given that I am driving back to Sussex on Monday, I have decided against the longer route, in order to conserve some energy for my long drive home. I am instead planning a di...
