Re: New to all this, anyone oop norf? (Durham area)

Sounds similar to the overnighters I sometimes do. Were you wild camping or campsite? I've done a route numerous times up to Hexham area using the old railway lines and some off road sections with a bit of quiet road thrown in. I like the variety which keeps it interesting. I usually stay in campsit...

Where do you ride normally? That trip you made recently with your tent sounds interesting, where did you go and how was it?

Re: New to all this, anyone oop norf? (Durham area)

I live in Durham (South Stanley) and I am by no means an expert but I've picked up a few tips from just being on this forum. I also learnt a lot when doing the WRT this year. I've always been into cycling/camping which has now progressed to bikepacking. The kit you can get now is much better than it...

Re: GPS Again

I normally use Bing maps which zooms to Explorer level, but I've also come across these sites which are quite good also: http://maps.the-hug.net - zooms only to Landranger level but it tells you the grid reference of every point you input, which could be useful. http://www.justgoride.co.uk - zooms t...

Re: Welsh Ride Thing 2013 - VIDEO

That's a brilliant video, really good footage and editing that captures everything that's good about the WRT. In case anyone missed my previous post of my video here it is again:

If anyone else has any more videos of the WRT please post them.

Cheeky Monkey I would be grateful of your opinion on the Dakota 20 when you get it. I'm on the verge of buying mine very soon.

Re: GPS Again

I'm still torn between the Etrex 30 and Dakota 20. Can anyone comment on screen quality of both of these devices please before I take the plunge :?:

I read somewhere that the Dakota screen is hard to read in daylight compared to the Etrex. Any thoughts on this anyone?

GPS Again

I'm after a GPS device and have been looking at the Garmin Etrex 30 or Garmin Dakota 20. They both look very good with similar features. One is touch screen the other isn't. Has anyone got any experience with either of these or advice on which one to go for?

Re: knocked off my bike

I've never agreed with the culture of "whiplash/where there's blame there's a claim" but I'm at a loss for loads of things:- loss of income, public transport while I can't commute once U'm back, I missed a Velodrome session that was a Fathers Day present on Sunday evening, I'm in training...

Re: Saddles

The key is to find a saddle that is compatible with your own anatomy. So it will be different for everyone. I have been using Ritchey saddles for three years and can ride all day with no soreness at all.

Re: Family friendly rides here abouts?

Try Sustrans Route 81 from Cwmystwyth to Aberystwyth, mostly all flat, virtually no roads and lovely scenery. Done this on the WRT on the second day in the morning and it was great.

Re: WRT Videos

Cheers Paul, yeah I thought the same kind of thing about that bloke. I'm not used to people being so nice! It was a great trip and if you're planning any more trips somewhere in the country soon give me a shout. I do think I'll have to invest in a GPS for next year though, god knows where I might of...

WRT Videos

Here's a little video I knocked up from the WRT 2013. Excuse the shaky camera work, it's hard to ride with one hand over rough terrain! :)

If anyone else has any footage of the weekend please post it as I'd love to see it.

Re: What energy gel?

This is how I make my flapjacks: In to a large bowl add some porridge oats, raisins, nuts (any kind you like), peanut butter, a small amount of plain flour, two eggs, melt a jar of set honey and pour that in and add enough cold water to mix everything. After mixing well the consistency should be thi...

Re: Food-what are you taking?

I'm taking quick cook pasta and pesto x 2, freeze dried camping meals x 2, plenty of home made flapjacks, porridge for breakfast, sachets of 3 in 1 coffee x 4, energy gels and may grab a cheap meal in Aberystwyth. I'm hoping to have enough to be self sufficient though.

Re: What energy gel?

I'm taking some energy gels on the WRT but I also make my own energy bars. Flapjack style bars with oats, nuts, honey, peanut butter etc. If anyone is interested I can post the recipe. It works out cheaper than buying proper bars which are actually a rip off when you look at the ingredients on the b...

Re: WRT Routes sorted yet ?

Just compiled my route on Bikehike and it's about 95 miles which takes in some of Route 81 south of the Rheidol Trail (thanks to Restlessnative for that) to Aberystwyth and back to Devils Bridge. I'm still fine tuning it, trying to work out where my overnight stops are going to be and being realisti...

Re: WRT GR are out!

Have a look at this site: http://wtp2.appspot.com/wheresthepath.htm It lets you import/export GPX files, you can put the grid references in the search function and you can compile your own routes. It also tells you the gradients of the route. I also use the the Ordnance Survey mode on Bing Maps whic...
