Re: selling all and getting a cheating bike.

Funny that you posted this Ton. I was down in my LBS today talking to my mate (who owns it) and he's just ordered himself a Giant Trance X e+1 pro. It comes with a 750 watt hour battery and there's an option to add a 250 watt hour range extender as well. He reckons that with both batteries it should...

Re: New hardtail MTB

Substandard off this forum has a Mr Harry and may be able to offer advice on what it's like. I've had two Smokestone fat bike frames (one aluminium and my new one which is titanium) and I've been delighted with both of them. The ti fat bike frame is noticeably more compliant than the alu frame was w...

Re: What you done t' your bike today

Faffed around trying to get to the bottom of a mysterious creaking noise on my fat bike. Saddle tightened, seatpost cleaned and regripper pasted and tightened, cassette tightened and bottom bracket checked and retightened. Hopefully it'll be gone now, we'll see though. Also fitted a Minnion FBF to t...

Dunno how big Ruby is Think small donkey  Is that with or without an inner Chris or with the Pro version? I was thinking with the inner (non pro) but it may be one of those unrealistic visualisation things where you think the space is bigger in your mind than it actually is in reality. I have...

Dunno how big Ruby is but I'm about to retire a 39kilo GSD/Dutch Herder home and am planning to take him for some nights out in my Lanshan 1! It may or may not be a total disaster depending on how wriggly he turns out to be but it looks spacious enough in theory. :???:

Re: Sleeping mat baffles.

I have an Exped mat (Synmat 7) and a Thermarest Neo Air X Lite and I get the same lower back pain and stiffness on both of them. I did go through a phase of believing that it was related to having them too firmly inflated but it now seems to happen irrespective of pressures. I'm now 58 and I've put ...

A Fidlock 800ml bottle and toolbox to go on my gravel bike. I've been using Fidlock bottles on my mountain bikes for a while now and they're bloody marvelous (if a bit pricey), hopefully these will be just as satisfactory.

Re: The post man's been ...

I think I'l be padding the mount with something (probably some foam wrapped in inner tube) as it's a bit lacking in girth and leaves only half of the velcro on the Wildcat harness overlapping. To be fair, it's like that on any normal seatpost, but I fear the nicely machined edge of the mount might ...

Re: The post man's been ...

Mrs Postie left me a Topeak DP dropper mount for the seat pack. I've always just bodged it with tape and a bit of inner tube, but this seems much better. That looks a great solution to the seatpack/dropper issue. I too have previously just bodged the seatpost (with a bit of pipe lagging in my case)...

I had the purple line disappear mid route as well for no apparent reason. I had to do what you did and re select the route again. It's only happened once iirc. Mines a fairly old Etrex 20 and it's been great for the most part.

I straight away thought Smokestone Mr Harry when I read your original post Ootini. I'm a bit biased as I've had a Henderson fat bike and now have a Bow Ti LS (both from Smokestone). My gravel bike is a Sonder Camino Ti but I'd definitely have gone with Mr Harry if it'd been available when I was buyi...

Re: Warm gloves - but not too cumbersome

The Galibier Ardennes gloves mentioned by Fordy above are very good for the money. They're not too bulky and surprisingly warm in anything over freezing weather (for me at least). They're not waterproof though (nor are they claimed to be). I use my pair for cool weather gravel biking, I prefer 100% ...

Re: Oval chainrings

I had an Absolute Black oval ring on my fat bike a few years ago which I rode until it wore out (it lasted ages to be fair). I liked it but I decided to replace it with a round ring and I've not bothered going back to oval. The difference was subtle to the point of being almost unnoticeable to me bu...

Re: Carrying fat inner tubes

Yep - that's what I used. There are lighter-weight Schwalbe tubes now too. The original Surly ones were huge and had their gravitational pull. I'll have to have a look for some of the Schwalbes then. I only use the tubes I have now for seating tyres and carrying just in case so it's not like they'r...

Re: Carrying fat inner tubes

When I had my OOF I used to tape a spare tube up in a plastic bag then strap it under the twin top tubes just behind the head tube and it was fine. I've never used proper fat bike tubes, always using 26/3.0 Specialized downhill tubes instead. Most of the time I've run tubeless but when I have had a ...

Re: What you done t' your bike today

Day two of the build of my new fat bike. It's going quite well so far, I had to cut the front brake hose at the lever end to allow it to be threaded through the internal frame routing ports but I think I've got away without needing a bleed which is a result. The main hold up is that the front brake ...

Re: Shimano brakes

I've run BB5s, BB7s and Spyres and thought they were all decent tbh. BB5s get bad press but I didn't have any issues with them and adjustment and maintenance wasn't that bad. I think comparing them to rim brakes rather than hydraulic disc brakes helps though. PS, all of these were on my gravel bike ...
