Re: Bivvy a Month 2024
Not as exciting as Reg's recent exploits but I did go on the correct day  Another school-night bivi, I sleep as well (if not better) on the bivis as I do at home so no issue with going to work the next day. I left home just after 8 which even after all these times still feels a little bit naug...

Excellent work there Reg
The rain Gods may often be against you but the other deities seem to be on your side, like the God of being offered dry places to sleep and the God of unexpected breakfasts.

Re: Who'd have thunk it, an interesting article on Road.cc?
Yet, if we'd like to save the planet, then eradicating the human race as quickly as possible would likely provide the best outcome. You've hit the nail on the head there Stu. I've said to my friends that my only hope is that we manage to make ourselves extinct before we damage the planet so much th...

Re: Who'd have thunk it, an interesting article on Road.cc?
I once described a uk event that had a rule about 'no fly and having to use public transport' to get to the start as tokenism. This upset some on here who I assume know the organisers. My point was that myself (and I'm sure others too) live where the public transport links make it a pain to get to t...

Re: Woods Rat Run
I'm not local (Isle of Wight) but I can see it from Freshwater... which isn't much help. East of the pier there is a cliff-top road which I remember as being quiet but west of the pier it was much harder to pick my way through as the roads don't really align. I ended up on the main road going past t...

When I rode it early morning there was a 50mph headwind blasting sand into my face! Just ride round with your brakes on and tip some fine sand into your jersey to recreate the affectgodivatrailrider wrote: ↑Mon Feb 05, 2024 8:17 am I've done a rework inland , skirting the conurbation. Re: Bivvy a Month 2024
My feet were really cold, so I put on my big winter Sealskins over the big socks I was already wearing, this didn't really improve matters. I've been trying to think what my favourite bit of kit for camping is for the other thread and you've helped me choose. I'd say it's my down sleeping socks/boo...

Re: Have tarps lost their popularity?
Is it that there was a group of people who 'endured' tarps for the weight saving and now that tents have closed the gap they have switched?
If it's forecast to be dry I'll even forgo the tarp and use just a bivi bag or even the hammock these days... but I'm one of the 'weirdos on here'

Re: Bivvy a Month 2024
Nice work Jimmy, I got out last Thursday for exactly the same reasons. Given it's been raining here on and off since Saturday and has been torrential + storm force winds on occasions I made the right choice! Everyone who's yet to get a score on the board should pick the next night with a half reason...

I rode the seafront on the outward leg of this but avoided it on the way back, might be of help picking a way around.

It's a section of Parkhurst forest which is 395 hectares in area and the second largest forest on the Isle of Wight after Brighstone Forest - full disclosure - wiki helped with than bit  It's on the 'wrong' side of the forest away from the car park, seemingly forgotten about for timber harvesti...

You know you're not like normal people when you think to yourself 'better get my bivi in whilst the cold weather is still here' It looks like it's going to be warm and wet again down here next week and a busy weekend schedule means a school-night bivi. I put my thermometer outside on the recyc...

The route looks like it goes along Bourmouth promenade, there are restrictions to cycling there in July/August. https://www.bcpcouncil.gov.uk/leisure-culture-and-local-heritage/beaches-and-quays/cycling-skating-skateboarding-and-use-of-escooters-on-the-seafront Having ridden along there on a Saturda...

It's more flat bar, and I'm leaning towards drops. Can't help with the rest of the question but I've just discovered these https://ritcheylogic.com/bike/handlebars/comp-corralitos-handlebar Described as drop bars for bikes not designed for drops. Biggest issue seems to be finding any for sale, I'd ...

That's pretty epic! I can't top that ride, that's quite a high benchmark. Fortunately you set quite a low bar for bivi spots so I'll aim for less impressive rides but better bivi locations.

I think in reality, they probably don't break much more than other vans, but there are loads of them and you know how people love it when then the popular kid has a break down. I thought that when I was buying my Caddy and everyone said the injectors would fail.... first breakdown was driving it ba...

Re: Anyine ride exclusively singlespeed?
Pretty much. I did take a geared bike to Jenride but mainly as I wanted suspension* and it's more sociable if riding with geared riders, although as Karl pointed out as I was generally climbing out of the saddle in a big gear, why did I bother having gears  Did the big tour with Mike this year ...

I might get the chance to go out again in December but for now here's a placeholder - usual backup plan - Mum's woodland. Plus I had s few new bits of kit I wanted to try out. Left home after dinner Saturday after a busy day. Luckily my kit is organised enough that I can get it all sorted and packed...

Blower is a Sprintex. They've unusual in that they're not a lobed Roots type but a 'twin screw'. This makes them much more efficient but they're very expensive to produce hence you rarely see them this side of Top Fuel. Used to see them on Rover V8 powered comp safari racers back in the day* * This...

3/ Ideally it'll be a picture taken during 2023 ... but I'll not be going checking. This was taken last year but after the closing date for last years comp so that must be ok? otherwise there's a period when any photos taken can't ever be in the comp? Re: Winter Hammocking
The first thing I'd look at would be the cinched ends of the UQ: not an easy thing to get right especially if you are on your own. They want to be just snug enough to pull the material up against the hammock but not too snug. If there's a gap then it feels like there's a draught and you get Cold Bu...
