Re: King Alfreds Way.

So many good points above... CM makes the very relevant point about commuters, head down etc. - to me thats one of the problems with national cycle network, its neither man nor beast - both leisure routes and commuting/utility. I feel like there often needs to be a much clearer demarkation between t...

Re: King Alfreds Way.

The golden era of post-war cycle touring. Feels like things are happening that make it revival / rebirth time, a time to appreciate just how good UK riding can be. I think that we need to recognise that ‘weekend break’ type cycling staycation is much more popular than old fashioned touring - by tha...

Re: King Alfreds Way.

. I saw a few social media posts from the, 'old guard'? of the CTC on the route and the comments about suitability. It must be frustrating for CUK. I've been a member for a few years and I'm happy that most of CUK's work supports things I have less need for but they're good things for UK cycling. I...

Re: King Alfreds Way.

Thanks for the feedback James I think that section is very different if you start in Winchester, as then it becomes The middle section, and a good chance to rest and recover after the Ridgeway before The trail starts ramping back up again Be interesting to know if you had followed just the GPX or in...

Re: King Alfreds Way.

Cheers Jack We agreed with MOD not to heavily publicise the old coaching road so didn’t include it as an option. (Guy mentions it briefly in the day 1 video) they are really keen to maintain a clear and consistent message regards safety, and we all feared that the ‘temptation’ for people to chance i...

Re: King Alfreds Way.

chucking the route in Komoot suggests: Komoot can be odd sometimes Try chucking it through as a hiking route rather than a cycle route... There are a few dicreet issues there, eg. The route west from Larkhill runs alongside the road on an MOD perimeter track Bridleway, but Komoot seems to identify ...

Re: King Alfreds Way.

@labrat is there a date for route release please? I am looking forward to this route being released as it passes my house and these are my backyard trails I have been riding for years. I have had something similar in the back of my mind to do for years. Should be a cracker. Hopefully there will be ...

Re: How far north can you get ont' train?

Oykel bridge was recognised as a break point, as it would riders to complete the route in sections by riding across to/from Lairg, Culrain or Invershin. Also note that by backtracking your route back to the Cape Wrath/JOG split point, you can then follow the GNT route over to Kinbrace station, which...

Re: Have R@pha finally lost the plot?

What mechanic is going to be buying at RRP? if they've pitched the trade/-discount/+VAT right then it shouldn't be too bad. And still too much mate. It's worth waiting for Trek to throw a T shirt at you or (insert other brand here) Also auto correct, Expensive hipster brand , hehe. indeed - unfortu...

Re: Have R@pha finally lost the plot?

What mechanic is going to be buying at RRP? if they've pitched the trade/-discount/+VAT right then it shouldn't be too bad. When I was in the accounts side of a major supplier we always tried to push through a really good deal for staff kit at our best dealers, often wasn't much more than cost. (eg....

Re: Which extra would keep me warmer?

I've had the Snugpak travel blanket and not overly impressed - its an odd shape/sixe - not quite thick enough to keep you warm, yet also not quite wide enough, and not quite square enough to wear as a wraparound around camp.... just doesn't work, and the insulation shifts around too. I wish they mad...

Re: 800 miles, 98% off road - anyone?

Oops, couple of those charts didn’t go up, but it hopefully shows that we have been looking at the data behind all this rather than just stumbling around blindly. I’d als add that one of the key lessons is that just publishing a ‘route’ isn't enough - it’s about having some additional support there,...

Re: 800 miles, 98% off road - anyone?

It will be interesting to see if this increases usage of the PBW. We live pretty close to it (we're a little way SW of Skipton) and it's rare to see any tyre tracks on those sections away from the main MTB centres I applaude the work and can appreciate all the (largely unseen) effort but following ...

Re: 800 miles, 98% off road - anyone?

Good to hear  Wait till someone gets me on the passage of the 1949 and ‘68 countryside acts through Parliament, and how the original aim, that these routes would be open to cyclists & horseriders (with ‘Long-distance route’ being a classification of its own , a bit like ‘special roads’ for...

Re: 800 miles, 98% off road - anyone

If interested in RoW stuff the IPROW page on FB can be illuminating. Written by RoW officers / people, AFAIK, so occasionally I suspect some confirmation-bias creeps in ;-). Quite a dry, sardonic writing style which I find amusing. Re: signage, I suspect this is a minefield (as some much in RoW see...
