Interesting idea. Let us know how they work in practice.

Re: 29er+ tyres

I ran a Knard on a Crest for a short while. I didn't die but I didn't feel totally confident in it either and certainly wouldn't have dropped the pressure low enough to get full benefit.

Re: The post man's been ...

Interesting. My Swift can feel a bit flexy when fully loaded but on balance I don't think I'd want it any stiffer.

I'm not sure I get the need to stiffen the Rooster - but then again, what do I know. And Sam does make nice bikes.

Looks v nice. I seem to remember the Rooster has heavier weight tubing than the Swift. Is that right?

Yes, but they're not blue. And that seems to have a Chronicle on the rear too.

Re: which bike ....

Clearly the answer is to get another Jones, then you can have one with gears and one SS.

And since you're buying in bulk, pop one in the basket for me too.

Kumquat - nice bike! In fact, almost exactly the same as mine. :-bd

I see you have a Chronicle on the front and I'm intrigued. I couldn't fit one in the fork on my Swift. Have you done something clever?

Re: Wide rims

I think Specialized tend to suffer this. They are relatively light and I quite like the way they perform (the ones I've used) but they are prone to cuts and sidewall tears IME.

I "need" a magenta one to go with my purple one. Then I could run one with gears and one SS. Just need to find some cash down the back of the sofa ...

Re: Singular Rooster 29+ Kickstater

I really hope 29+ doesn't disappear. It makes a lot of sense in the right application. I reckon it'll stick around as a niche for a while yet.

The Rooster <ahem> cock-up would have ruffled my feathers for sure. Glad I didn't have the cash to invest at the time.

Re: best bike for bikepacking?

I've got a Stooge, which I run SS with a 29+ front, a Buzzard with 130mm forks and an original rigid Swift with 'normal' 29in tyres and rims and 3x9 gears. I tend to pick the Swift for bikepacking and it's never let me down. But they'd all do the job.

Complete SS drivetrain (stainless chainring, KMC chain and wide-base Groove Armada sprocket) for £32 in the On-One sale. Can't be bad.

Re: The Strada Militaires of the Italy-France border, Turin-

I've been to Molini on a couple of mtb trips and the riding is the best techy, flowy alpine riding I've done. I also had a family holiday in the area a couple of years ago just because it's beautiful and the food is amazing. Rivierabike.co.uk are based in Molini - you may have met Ady, who owns/runs...

Mr 1950s looks well dodgy. Clearly thinking about half-inching that bike.

I didn't know about the museum either. Will pop in if I'm in the area.

Fantastic! I'm off to Molini in May but uplifting rather than bikepacking. Would love to do something like this, it's such a great part of the world.

I've been riding my rigid, geared Swift with 2.3 tyres around steep twisty Cornwall back roads and the occasional "bridleway" on hols over the past couple of days and yet again I've been struck by how well it does this stuff. It rides everything like a bike should. Yes, it's clearly a comp...
