Re: Wtd - Cheapish Tarp

Generous 1 man, standard 2 man? Is there a standard 2 man tarp size? I'm still pretty new to a lot of this! Most tend to be standardish sizes and very much either 1 or 2 man. I'd class the R!G7 as a 2 man. I think DD might do a slightly larger 1 man in their superlight range? The Rig7 is something ...

Wtd - Cheapish Tarp

Hello! Does anyone have a cheap tarp knocking around that they no longer use/need? Bonus points if it comes with Lines and a pole but not critical. I'm looking for something I can practice with and decide if I can deal with the potential faff over the next few months before properly investing for ne...

Re: Breakfast with a view.

Great idea! Sometimes I need a "reason" to get out, however contrived it may be, and this is as good as any, but probably better. I'll try and get involved soon. You've sussed me out! I really didn't want to get out of bed and go and get cold this morning, but turning it into an event of ...

Breakfast with a view.

I've had an idea! Sort of. I had been inspired by the Bivvy a month challenge and though I'm not yet a fully fledged bivvi-er I had plans to continue finding my way by bicycle to camp sites and practicing the fine art of TLS over this winter. I'm reliably informed that that's no longer allowed, and ...

Re: Peloton worth more than Ford

Without getting too much into the nitty gritty of it, investors blummin' love subscription models that gather loads of data whilst providing a pretty robust service. I get it, think about all the people that go to spin classes in the gym. Now tell them they can do it from home with similar motivatio...

How generous is the sizing on these mate? I’m a 32-36 inch waist depending on manufacturer/how many pints in I am.

But I should add, I do use an overland "Long Sleeve Technical Tee" and their baselayer with pockets, both of which seem delightfully well made.

Re: Morvello overland bibs

Another long term vote of confidence in Morvelo "normal" series. I've had 4 years use out of 2 bib shorts, 1 bib knicker, and 1 bib long that are all still in regular rotation. The only sign of wear being a patch on the longs where I spilt super glue repairing a snag in a tent outer. Thats...

It's always reassuring when your expensive kit choices work out.

And every trip is a lesson😁
4 degrees and cosy after a few pints means I'll be cosy at 0 degrees sober, right?

Re: Do you still cycle tour "traditionally"?

You will all undoubtedly be pleased to know that I did indeed get out, I didn't die, and I remembered my tent poles. In fact I had a bloody delightful time, even climbing Mam Tor the morning after. Bike inc. kit weighed a portly 24kg and I know I have areas of improvement. I didn't take the kitchen ...

Re: Do you still cycle tour "traditionally"?

I think the last time I used panniers other than for commuting was doing an after-work overnighter with a colleague where it was easier just to chuck stuff into panniers for the relatively short distance rather than faffing with soft luggage. Does that mean I was touring?* *Rhetorical question, ple...

Re: Do you still cycle tour "traditionally"?

I know we do the 'what is bikepacking', soft luggage v panniers discussions fairly regularly but when does a bike trip become a 'tour'? Is it a matter of how many days/nights? Is a 'tour' a series of rides between pre-arranged accommodation? Or is it a matter of using panniers rather than soft lugg...

Re: Do you still cycle tour "traditionally"?

Never toured so (apart from one of those quick rack things that came up on another thread) I've never had a pannier set-up. Might be worth using the trip as an exercise in how little you can get away with carrying and yet still manage? Sure you could chuck the panniers on and take an excess of kit ...

Re: Do you still cycle tour "traditionally"?

The most important thing is that you do it and don't let these sort of decisions prevent you from going out. But.... I do agree with Stu and others that you will enjoy your trip a lot more if the bike is lighter. I started out with panniers and even did some fairly gnarly bikepacking type stuff wit...

Re: Do you still cycle tour "traditionally"?

Personally, I've never really used a rack / pannier set up. No matter where I'm going, I still aim to carry the minimum I can. I don't ever see the point in taking more than I have to, so I'm never in need of the kind of capacity a rack / panniers provides. I do envy this approach you know. I've al...

Do you still cycle tour "traditionally"?

There is a reason for asking the question! I'm off on a "micro trip" this weekend. Me and a pal, campsite that's reasonably local. We're north Manchester, heading to a site in Edale. Leave about 3pm, get there, pitch up, go and sit outside the pub until we can't feel our extremities, then ...

Re: Whats the go to insulated jacket?

I have both the Crikey, how much Brevet insulated jersey and the Crikey, how much Down Jacket. The former is brilliant, and really great at regulating through a huge range of temperatures. The latter, annoyingly, I probably wouldn't buy again. Don't get me wrong, it's a good looking, well cut down j...

Re: Improving Bikepacking

Interesting replies. I came from a hiking type background, so when I got into cycling moving into bikepacking was a natural move. I think going the other way feels slightly less natural. The main challenges are the same - where will I sleep, how will I look after myself, what if.... Being on a bike...

Re: Improving Bikepacking

Let's play a game for a second and look at the cost of starting from nothing to something capable. (from new for the sake of having something to start from) Consider all values as "ish"! I'm looking at good value, proven kit and a summer jaunt. Bike: Bizango - £600 Bikapacking bags (Frame,...

Re: Improving Bikepacking

Moving to Scotland or somewhere were I might have half a leg to stand on! But out of all the the nights we’ve all had out, how many instances have we been asked to move on? I’m suggesting it few/nil instances from the 1,000’s of nights we’ve collectively had out. Just say you’re Mike from Bromsgrov...
