Re: The kit's got lighter ... but are we still touring?
I totally agree with everything said, I was surprised bicycle panniers are such a new thing. The point I was trying to make is it really matters not what way people carry or the things they need, and sometimes we overthink this to the risk of not riding because we need the latest bestest lightest th...

Re: The kit's got lighter ... but are we still touring?
I think everyone is getting a little silly, what matters is you get out on your bike and enjoy going longer than usual, whether you stay in a youth hostel, bothy or a palatial 3 person tent doesn't really matter, if you need it you carry it, who can say what anyone needs/wants? I use a pair of very ...

Re: GPS navigation recommendations?
I am using a second hand garmin gpsmap62s, batteries last a good day if you stay off the backlight, and spares are easy to carry, I just wrap a few with some electrical tape and pop them into a corner of a bag, tape is useful for repairs as well. It always gets a really quick fix, so you could leave...

Re: Rack or seat bag?
One thing to consider, I use panniers on my Longitude and I have no worries about them scratching the frame, if I use my tailpack and frame bag I have to helicopter tape the strap points as they just rub the paint clean off, some may like the beaten and tired look. I can still carry two water bottle...

Re: Rack or seat bag?
I should also point out I went onto SJS website and ordered a pair of extra hooks to make it more secure.
Looks like Ortlieb had the same idea.

Re: Rack or seat bag?
I used Ortlieb panniers on the WRT, no problem, they are great, easy on-off when throwing the bike over locked gates, not so good when pushing the bike up steep hills! I like them as I can squeeze pretty much everything I need in them along with a possum frame bag. I did go for the smallest ones tho...

Re: Esi chunky for Jones 660 bars, where?
I wanted the XL extra chunkys and no-one had them, I ordered direct from the ESI, had to pay VAT and RM tax. ESI said no-one in Europe had ever ordered any, so I had zero chance of finding any. I do like them but they are very fragile and wear out real quick, I have a few holes appearing in them. I ...

Re: WTD: Mess Tin
really? I wouldn't bother they are useless, hateful things, that have a habit of scalding your hands when the handle folds up on you, whilst trying to drain the water out. I remember doing my basic and having to polish them up to a mirror finish. Leave them for the cadets. You would be better off wi...

Re: taking a bike on a train info req
This is a tricky one, however I have had the same problem with Virgin trains and still went to the station with two bikes and knowing there was no space, the virgin platform guard person, said its never normally a problem and sure enough there was only one bike in the locker at the front of the trai...

Re: Side pull bottle cages
I use these http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/elit ... prod145186 at £1.49 they are a bargain. they survived the WRT with 750ml bottles in on my Longitude.
I just squeezed them a bit to make them a bit tighter.
