Re: Pennine Bridleway for mortals

Much appreciated: glad you enjoyed it. It was on the second day I noticed some of the gel sachets have "Max 20/day" on them, so I had to moderate my habit. But hey! I'm in control: I can stop anytime I want =P~ Never had digestive problems with gels: perhaps gels and cheese rolls form some...

Pennine Bridleway for mortals

It's surprising how reading too many accounts of super-fast, sub-24-hour efforts can lull you into a false sense of security. I was reasonably confident I could do the lot (train to Cromford on Friday pm; ride to Kirkby Stephen, then to Oxenholme; train home) and be back in Bedfordshire for Monday m...

Re: SE (Chilterns) Winter Bivy - 10/11 Dec

Staggered starting points at Berko & Tring, then heading out to Chinnor-ish sounds ideal. Both are nearer the trails with easier parking than Watford Junction. I'm happy to follow and look forward to the exploring. The... 80 miles ...option sounds epic! I agree its best to keep the route discret...

Re: Bivvy a Month 2016.

5/10 Recent chilly nights in the Chilterns and general lethargy about packing had me add the Buffalo Bag to my "summer kit" of down jacket & salopettes, then strap it all to the commuter bike, rather than pack with a bit of thought. I'd forgotten how uncompressible these things were :s...

Re: SE (Chilterns) Winter Bivy - 10/11 Dec

Train or ride for me (Leighton or Tring). Crewlie - Trains run direct from Northampton/Long Buckby/Rugby to Leighton Buzzard and Tring. Bikes are carried free & trains are more beer-friendly than cars. No bike reservation needed on these (London Midland) trains. To minimise the "which way n...

Re: SE (Chilterns) Winter Bivy - 10/11 Dec

How about this: Option 1 - Meet at Leighton Buzzard train station (between Euston & Milton Keynes) at a 'reasonable time' for everyone (perhaps midday-ish? Bearing in mind it will get dark at 3.51pm). There's parking in side roads available nearby if driving and it's generally safe to leave a ca...

Re: Bivvy a Month 2016.

I think it was 10-11 Dec that Stu came up with.
That's good for me for a 'South East'-ish Winter bivi.
Are there any plans, or is everyone open to suggestions?

Re: Bivvy a Month 2016.

I'll consider the next few months a warm-up for 2017, then. A paltry 4/9 so far, but last night was the first time on a 'school night'. Made for quite a surreal day at work: one to be repeated. Somewhere in the woods near Bletchley. Only visible by police helicopter with a thermal camera... https://...

Re: Anyone ride a Genesis longitude 2016

I was discussing the Longitude with a Madison rep' at a recent show: he was quite flustered when I asked why they had fitted rack mounts on the dropouts, but not on the seat stays. That and lack of bottle mounts on the seat tube seem a bit of an oversight, perhaps? However; the Vagabond frame seems ...

Re: More dynamo woe.

Always complain if something complicated and expensive fails sooner than you expect, with details of the failure mode and use it's had. It's the only way to encourage manufacturers to do proper product development and make good quality components continually. Let them know the customer is unhappy a...

Re: sandstone way route

I rode this early May 2015 with a race-against-the-tide dash via Holy Island. South-north. 2.5 days. Good route; well sign-posted in most places (buy the map!); ideal prep' for bigger things. Never too far from food. Clennell Hall has a bunkhouse (£20) with a drying room :-bd . Recommend using an MT...
