Re: Antidote to the 'modern world'.

The last time I did any precision hacksawing and filing was when I was an apprentice. We did a module in the fitting and turning shop, and if you were caught leaving a chuck key unattended in the lathe chuck, the punishment was to make your own medal. This had to be hacksawed from a bar of 100mm sil...

My Restrap top tube bag fits my Galaxy nicely, even with a layer of foam glued inside as a bit of padding.

Looks like a great holiday. I think that I'd need mountain bike gears rather than road bike gears though.

Re: King Alfreds Way.

I've only cycled the section along the ridgeway and was always glad to have 2.4" tyres. I'm new to riding on chalk, but I quickly learned that although the surface dries very quickly, if you break through the thin crust onto the damp chalk beneath the wheels can easily be whipped from under you...

Re: Between now and January?

I had planned to return to Spain next week and walk the Camino San Salvador, but after a fantastic ride along the Ridgeway a couple of weeks ago, I'm going to take advantage of the current drought conditions in England and attempt King Alfred's Way instead. I say attempt because it's been a very bus...

Most "standard" drinks bottles are compatible with Sawyer filters. I've used Coke, Pepsi and various still / sparkling water bottles in the past.

https://www.rspb.org.uk/birds-and-wildlife/wildlife-guides/bird-a-z/white-tailed-eagle/ I've been working near Reading this year, and I've never seen as many Red Kites as I have around here. It's a little disconcerting when you stop for a rest and they start circling overhead, and I've heard from a...

Re: Wildlife

I forgot to mention that I saw some kind of mustelid crossing the road while I was on Camino in Asturias last month. I think that it was a polecat, but at the larger end of the scale and an unusual blonde colour. It walked down a path over the road from me, stopped and checked for traffic and then c...

I've seen them on the Upper Derwent when I've been out in my canoe.

What's your go to spork/foon and which jacket am I after. During deep summer I use as James said once to keep the beverages cool... I can't get on with sporks, they're neither one thing nor the other to me. I use a long-handled spoon, long handled to get to the bottom of the bag (container)...

Those lean-to shelters are great too. I've stayed in a few of them in Sweden, and even when I was sleeping in my hammock they were really useful for cooking and lounging about in, especially as most of them had fire places.

Re: Lightweight (semi?) geodesic tents

My winter tent is a Big Sky International Chinook, a 2 person tent with two doors and two porches weighing under 2kg. They do smaller (and lighter) versions and a slightly less heavy duty two pole versions. They aren't cheap though, and can be quite hard to get hold of in the UK these days.

The main thing is that you'll still be getting out on the same routes and having a good time without damaging your health further. My mate was a really keen keen mountain biker until he got cancer, and then stopped for a long time while he underwent treatment. He bought an EBike when he was regainin...

Creaking Brooks Cambium.

My Brooks Cambium has started to creak quite loudly. I've made sure the bolts are tight, but it's till noisy. I've considered adding some kind of lube to the interface points, but before I do this has anyone fixed this problem in the past?

I'm at work today and it's scorchio down south. There's a strong rumour that if the temperature gets above 30 degrees they'll close site at 1 o'clock, so fingers crossed. If it happens it'll be the perfect afternoon for a spin out along the Kennet and Avon Canal and Berkshire's bridleways.

Great effort. The wind has been mad in The Lakes for the last few weeks. I've been caught off guard a few times by calm conditions in the valleys and blowing a hooley on the tops. I've been bagging some Back o' Skiddaw Wainwrights on the bike recently, and on a few occasions I've had to pedal downhi...

Re: Jeff gets the horn!

Although the track to Sandwood Bay would be great on a bike, if you go on foot you can cut across the moor from the track to overlook Am Buachaille and then follow the cliff top path to the beach. I'm glad that I did that as it gives a different perspective to the bay as well.

Looks like a great trip Jeff. My sons are still surprised when I laugh at them to answer their questions about the wifi password or phone signal. It's a shame you couldn't make it to Sandwood Bay. I walked there a few years ago and it's stunning; at the time I thought that it would be good on the bi...
