Re: Layering for cold weather riding
I carry gilets on nearly all my rides, they work really well and pack down small. Normal windproof in normal conditions and then an insulated one when it's cooler. Really liking my OMM Rotor vest. It's the lightest insulated gilet I own, and easily as warm as some of the heavier ones I have I was to...

Re: Zero drop (barefoot) winter insoles?
I got some wool felt inners to add a bit of warmth to my boots when I was in Lapland for a week. Wife and kids were in proper Sorels. I was in a pair of Scarpa SLs with the inner and was fine. Including for a good few hours standing still waiting for the northern lights
They were pretty cheap too

Re: Rigid MTB tyre size..?
I was running a 2.4" on the front of mine, usually a Maxxis HR2 or Ardent. Although I had 2.1" Nanos and they were great But about a year ago I went for a plus wheel/tyre up front. I'd had it for a while and not got around to fitting it. It's a straight swap between both wheels but since p...

Re: Bivvy a month 2022
I bagged my November bivvy on Friday night Combination of work and other stuff on means I haven't ridden much for the last few weeks. I'd planned to do a club ride and then bivvy out afterwards but I didn't have time to sort myself out to leave at the right time so changed plans. Stayed home to watc...

It'll still be warm, but weight for weight not as warm as normal non-active insulation

Re: Suggest a jacket with good discount?
That has active insulation, it's designed to be worn on the move. You want the non active version for static use. Active is not as warm but much more breathable, which is great while in motion but not in camp or stopped

Re: What do you cook and what on when out bikepacking
Ti conducts heat too fast and food sticks to the pan. Sorry to be a pedant, but it's the other way around. It conducts heat poorly, so you get a hotspot where the flame is while the heat doesn't disperse well across the base. So your food tends to burn unlike ally pots where the heat from a narrow ...

Eating is mainly in the pub/cafe. On most trips I'll have a dehydrated meal with me just in case
These days my stove is, at most, used for boiling water for brews or hot water based meals. CBA with anything more complicated. Mainly for the faff and the cleaning up afterwards

Dropped off some XL bike hooks the other. Means I can fit my 29+ tyre/rim into it, which wouldn't play nicely with normal hooks. It's the only part I've purchased for my new bike rack. The rest is made some wood from pallets and some bits I had knocking about. Holds 2 bikes (plus spare wheels) and t...

Re: what is a bikepacking bike?
Ask most on this forum and they'll say any bike you own. Still need to do some bikepacking on my brompton though, have bikepacked on all the others. I think most will default to a rigid 29er but hardtails making up most of the remainder Ask anyone vaguely interested in this area and they'll say an a...

Another seat post clamp. The bolt up one on my full sus just randomly broke! Very strange, must have been stressed but hadn’t been adjusted in absolutely ages. Was fine when I put it away and not when I went to ride it

I have one on my cargo bike
I found the wheel flopped when I put it on the centre stand - if there's cargo on the back then the front wheel gets lifted up. I put one of those on and it fixed it, although doesn't work very well if there's heavyish cargo on the front rack

Berghaus also doing this in some of their jackets
The theory is sound, there must be some help in real life, particularly if you can do it with no weight penalty

This was a cracking little trip. Thanks all for the company and the banter. There was a lot of laughter in the pub  My favourite bit of the trip was the full bore belly laugh the woman outside the cafe let out when she got the answer to her question of where we slept and what in, it was hilari...

Re: Ventile - Alpkit Jump the Wagon
They've been available from Alpkit from a while now Didn't know Fjallraven did a ventile jacket. G1000, epic cotton or some other naturalish fibre but not ventile. They do have a very expensive smock available I like ventile but don't use it for cycling. As a former bushcrafter I have a double venti...

When my thermarest neoair pump dies i'll probably get one of these. The neoair pump is actually lighter, incl batteries, that the inflating sack I used to use for it. Plus it's totally faff free, although I usually put a couple of extra breaths in to get it up to pressure

Re: What powerbank
My bikepacking powerbank is an Exposure Sixpack. Bought it so I don't need to take a separate powerbank. If it was a longer trip or I think I'm going to use the light a lot, then I'd bring something else. Usually a Nitecore F1 running a single 18650 cell, I then bring as many separate 18650s as I th...

Went out for a night ride earlier. Four riders, bar and helmet lights all exposure.
I’ve had a few lights now and still have a few different ones, but the exposure ones really are good. Excellent mounts too
