Re: Kids being wrapped in cotton wool

My boy loves being out in the wilds, but wouldn't do it if I didn't make him. He always moans about it beforehand, then the minute his arse hits the saddle he is happy. As he doesn't go to school, I get round this by telling him that it is the home-ed equivalent of PE and I would get in trouble if h...

Re: USB Charging on tour

Yeah we have done all our campsite charging in the loos too. We carry all sorts of battery packs so that you can leave them on charge in the toilets overnight and not be too worried about them getting nicked. Better than getting your phone or Garmin nicked anyway.

Sounds interesting. Craik is not far from us. Craik forest makes for nice riding. Count us in for the GPX at least - I will put it in the diary, but can't make any other promises this far ahead.

Re: Where are all the women?

Just a reminder that the discussion on the BAM thread starts on page 24 and continues to page 25.
It appears that some folk haven't read the comments on page 24. :P

That sounds good pistonbroke. Should be warmer than here any rate.

I am in southern Scotland. If any other women reading this would like to go for a ride sometime then please send me a message. My son (13) would come along too.

Re: Bivvy a Month 2017.

Go on then - move it! Chop these non BAM posts out and put them in a separate thread. I think the subject matter deserves it. Otherwise in a couple of days it will disappear beneath the waves of BAM and be lost forever, which would be a shame.

Re: Bivvy a Month 2017.

I'm sorry my friend, but you just don't get it. Most women are physically weaker than men - that's just what testosterone does. Thus most women are more at risk of all these sort of nasty things than men are as it involves physical overpowering. Women know this and the fear of it can cause some to a...

Re: Bivvy a Month 2017.

I'm sorry, but fear of getting your bike nicked really doesn't come anywhere close to fear of being raped. As emotional trauma goes they are on a completely different scale.

Re: Bivvy a Month 2017.

Women don't always want to voice fear of assault btw - it can be seen to make them even more vulnerable. I'm sure that's right but I've found many never reach that point in their reasoning and progress no further than the initial - 'f*ck that, I'm not sleeping outside with the slugs and pooing in a...

Re: Bivvy a Month 2017.

Well yes, safety in numbers and all that. Group events could be a good way to get more women into bikepacking to start with. I think the Adventure Syndicate stuff is really great, but I can't see that it has brought a lot of women in here for example so far. Be great if it did though. I don't know w...

Re: Bivvy a Month 2017.

It is true that it bikepacking is a male-dominated activity. Certainly there are very few solo female bikepackers anyway. I think for a lot of women the fear of nasty things that creepy men might do to them in locations where nobody can hear them call for help is what puts them off. Statistically yo...

It absolutely does.
Agree with that ^ the rules are good for motivation but not for penalising someone harshly. You sound like you have done it.

Re: Taking dog on bike trips ?

We tried it in Portugal with a dog we tried to rescue there. It wasn't a success but that wasn't the dog's fault - she couldn't have been more obliging. It was just knackering for her to run alongside on the lead for long periods of time, no matter how slowly. Dogs aren't meant to run at a steady pa...
