Re: Grumpy old men
Thanks for the offers. The bike is a Ribble Ultralite Racing 7005. Mine is from 2011, they sold until 2016 so not exactly ancient. The hanger is OEM. Exhaustive efforts to find a match have failed. To be fair to Ribble after much email tennis they said they managed to find the drawings and were tapp...

Re: Grumpy old men
I’m having a very long and boring dealing with a bike company who are not providing replacement derailleur hangers for a road bike I have. They are not made by anyone else. A whole bike is useless because the manufacturer has no eye for its past products, only what it can sell new. In Kathmandu 201...

Re: Yeah this really helps ...
But people like fire, it's part of that return to basics/outdoorsy experience. Which is why I've recently bought this for tomorrows Winter Bivi  https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50732751151_b39063f5d8_c.jpg Forgive me if I’m stating the bleeding obvious Sean. Make sure to place the fire b...

Re: Grumpy old men
Progress is good. Newer better designs etc. are not bad in themselves. However change at the cost of longevity, durability and compatibility isn’t a good thing. Having to upgrade a whole bike for the sake of a single broken component is wasteful. Trickling in change is also wasteful, did companies r...

Re: Best trail / multitool of all time?
Only hassles was tightening up the EBB on the jones. I had to take it apart and use the 4mm allen key separately with my leatherman pliers for leverage When I used to ride my Genesis with a Bushnell EBB I carried a 4mm allen key as a multi tool just didn't have the reach or the leverage. Herein lie...

Re: Best trail / multitool of all time?
I spotted those the other week Luke but the price was a bit off-putting. Too right. Not really sure how much use the link pliers are in the field anyway. If your chain breaks you can add a quick link with no tools. If you need to alter your chain length for a broken derailleur or whatever you still...

I have a very reliable Park I-Beam T3 which I made perfect for my needs by swapping the Phillips no.2 for a Torx T20 so I could work on my Rohloff if it ever went wrong.... still waiting to use it in the field after 20years

Bear in mind that if it doesn't get into the country by Jan 1st and no deal is struck you could get hit with 20% import tariff as well as a brokerage fee which makes it very pricy. Brexit, the gift that keeps on giving  Indeed. So far all it’s made me do is spend more money in the EU than I wo...

Re: What capacity battery pack do you use?
I used to use a single 5300mAh for short trips with 2 on longer trips (purely for redundancy). Combined with a SON dynamo and Igaro charger this gives me pretty much unlimited power for my modest needs - Edge gps (or Etrex depending on trip), iPhone, radio (longer trips only) and Joystick (doubles a...

Intriguing but I’m inclined to agree with Ledburner, besides, I have a stash of various rings to fit my old ATB pattern 5 arm spider that won’t wear out anytime soon. All this buying kit that lasts really hampers me from adopting change

Re: Rohloff chainset ??
I’ve run Rohloff hubs in many frames. Standard dropouts, Rohloff OEM dropouts with EBB, Salsa Alternators and Surly track ends. All work fine but have different strengths/weaknesses. My preference is for either an EBB or Alternators - for ease of use and aesthetically. Surly track ends come second i...

Re: Rohloff chainset ??
gonna press the buy button on a rohloff for my ecr. as a big lump of a bloke, i tend to spin rather than grind. so i am wondering what size chainring i should be looking at ? and ideas for a crankset too. thaks. One thing to decide is whether to go quick release or threaded/nutted axle. I have QR o...

Re: Rohloff chainset ??
i have a boost slx crankset spare. would that be ok with a 32 tooth surly staiinless chainring ? Matched with the correct cog (17t maximum) it’ll work fine. It may not be the exact chain line but a little either way is not going to be a problem at all. I swap two Rohloff wheels between 4 frames fai...

Re: Rohloff chainset ??
Ok, not bob on then.
Rohloff chain line is now 51-54 (I think) depending on exact spec.
Few mm either way is not going to cause any real issues if you’re not using a belt drive.
I’m using square taper BB still so can adjust accordingly

Re: Rohloff chainset ??
For a crankset mounting the chainring on the outer face of a shimano triple crankset gives the correct 54mm chainline ( and lots of clearance on 3.0 tyres). Shimano Zee and Saint cranks will also give the correct chainline. Rohloff chain line may be the same as some boost chainsets afaik. This make...

Re: Rohloff chainset ??
I use a Middleburn with the adapter to give the correct chainline and a 36t sprocket, gets me up most things. This ^^ I have 36t on my 29er and 34t on my 29+ TBH I’d like an even smaller gear in the 29+ for loaded off road crawling but my Middleburn crankset is old ATB pattern 5 arm so won’t take l...

Shaf, that was just an example for the hard of understanding, it wasn't my personal experience ... although it actually sounds totally feasible. If you added a biggish reserve cell you could probably get 50hrs or more useful light from a 6 Pack. Some folk can get by with a Joystick on the 36hr sett...
