Re: Sleeping bag or quilt with tiny pack size
I have a Cumulus 200 bag (like the 150 quilt) and it just squeezes into a 1 litre drybag, but you can't close the drybag. That's really useful to know thanks - looks a good bag and should easily fit into the space I've got with room for a layer too. I use a slightly beefier mat. I've tried a Klymit...

Re: Sleeping bag or quilt with tiny pack size
Cumulus 150 would be the choice du forum but if you are a cold sleeper then the 250 might be better. Also consider high quality sleeping bags like PHD, their Minim 200 packs small. I can easily get the Cumulus 150, Exped May, Borah Gear bivy, Trekkertent DCF tarp into an 8L bag. If I used the Klymi...

Re: Sleeping bag or quilt with tiny pack size
I've got a Sea to Summit Traveller TR1 Long sleeping bag / quilt, and I managed to squeeze it, a 3/4 length underquilt, a down jacket, my sleeping base layers, a hat and a pair of warm socks into a 9l handlebar drybag. Not come across the Sea to Summit bags before, will have a look. That's a lot of...

Sleeping bag or quilt with tiny pack size
As part of my project to get my entire sleep kit (including bivy, tarp + mat) into an 8l dry bag, I'm looking for a summer bag that packs really small. My current bag is an Alpkit Pipedream 400 which is too warm for summer and doesn't compress nearly small enough. Compressing to a tiny size is more ...

Re: What GPS unit to get?
All good replies. I've reviewed my needs and seeing as I'll be using the GPS unit for Scottish winter mountaineering - wet and wearing big gloves - a touch screen is out. Currently considering the etrex 32x as an option. Anyone used it or similar etrex unit and had any issue with screen size? I hav...

Re: What GPS unit to get?
+1 for the Etrex. Great battery life, easily swappable batteries, reliable and simple to use. I wish I didn't have to plug it into a laptop to upload/download GPX files, but apart from that it does everything I need it to.
The handlebar mounts are cheap too.

I'll miss them if they go - I found it a good place to buy Montane and Rab kit. There was generally a good selection of quality lightweight waterproofs and insulated jackets at different sizes and colours in my local store, plus the occasional absolute bargain.

Re: Weird gear indexing issue
Always, always, always check mech hanger alignment before fannying about with indexing. I wouldn't even trust a new one. There's a very good Lifeline X tools alignment tool for this. I much prefer it to the more expensive Park Tools version. Not done that... Will see if I can find a mate with an al...

Re: Weird gear indexing issue
Has the mech stop somehow been knocked out (I assumed going from smallest sprocket to second smallest)? Bent the mech hanger? Mech bolt come loose? (yep, I'm guessing wildly but they're the obvious things I'd check). However, my other recent thread may indicate I am not best placed to advise on dri...

Re: Weird gear indexing issue
Don't know if it applies to SRAM, but if it's the biggest 2 cogs, have you tried winding the b-tension screw in a touch? They can rattle a bit loose over time and cause the top jockey to catch (at least on a Shimano mech they can) Sorry no it's the small cogs. I did try adjusting the b-tension scre...

Re: Weird gear indexing issue
Do you have a bit of something trapped in the cassette? When you say 10 & 9 are we talking the big cogs? I find that the big (low) end of the cassette tends to be th most sensitive to mis-adjustment. I think it is because the step between the individual cog diameters tends to be bigger, so ther...

Re: Weird gear indexing issue
Would have been a neat solution, but I'm pretty sure that's not the case. The cassette was installed by the LBS back in Feb along with some other work, but the problem has only started in the last few weeks.

Weird gear indexing issue
Well weird to me anyhow... I'm on 1x11 with a SRAM 10-42 cassette and Shimano XT M8000 mech and shifter. It's shifting perfectly all the way up and down apart from one gear change. If I try and shift from 10 to 9 it just clicks away until I shift up another gear and then it jumps up to 8. Not had th...

Re: Highland Trail 550 - 2020
Anyone planning an ITT this year assuming lock-down / restrictions are lifted before Julember? Not all, but perhaps part of it. Though, even if restrictions permit it, the welcome in some small communities may be uncertain for a bit. I've been a bit startled by the extreme reactions in my small vil...

Re: Changing pads whilst out
my rear brake fell apart mid-descent :o They were brand new too - the resin just sheared clean off the metal. This is one of the reasons I fit, bed in and run my spare pads for a week or 2. It should pick up any manufacturing defects and I know they fit in the calliper. Bedding in also needs to ide...
