When I rode it early morning there was a 50mph headwind blasting sand into my face! Just ride round with your brakes on and tip some fine sand into your jersey to recreate the affect

Re: Bivvy a Month 2024

My feet were really cold, so I put on my big winter Sealskins over the big socks I was already wearing, this didn't really improve matters. I've been trying to think what my favourite bit of kit for camping is for the other thread and you've helped me choose. I'd say it's my down sleeping socks/boo...

Re: Have tarps lost their popularity?

Is it that there was a group of people who 'endured' tarps for the weight saving and now that tents have closed the gap they have switched?

If it's forecast to be dry I'll even forgo the tarp and use just a bivi bag or even the hammock these days... but I'm one of the 'weirdos on here'

Re: Bivvy a Month 2024

Nice work Jimmy, I got out last Thursday for exactly the same reasons. Given it's been raining here on and off since Saturday and has been torrential + storm force winds on occasions I made the right choice! Everyone who's yet to get a score on the board should pick the next night with a half reason...

I rode the seafront on the outward leg of this but avoided it on the way back, might be of help picking a way around.

You know you're not like normal people when you think to yourself 'better get my bivi in whilst the cold weather is still here' It looks like it's going to be warm and wet again down here next week and a busy weekend schedule means a school-night bivi. Biggest issue seems to be finding any for sale, I'd ...

That's pretty epic! I can't top that ride, that's quite a high benchmark. Fortunately you set quite a low bar for bivi spots  so I'll aim for less impressive rides but better bivi locations.

I think in reality, they probably don't break much more than other vans, but there are loads of them and you know how people love it when then the popular kid has a break down. Pretty much. I did take a geared bike to Jenride but mainly as I wanted suspension* and it's more sociable if riding with geared riders, although as Karl pointed out as I was generally climbing out of the saddle in a big gear, why did I bother having gears  Did the big tour with Mike this year ...

I might get the chance to go out again in December but for now here's a placeholder - usual backup plan - Mum's woodland. Plus I had s few new bits of kit I wanted to try out. Blower is a Sprintex. They've unusual in that they're not a lobed Roots type but a 'twin screw'. This makes them much more efficient but they're very expensive to produce hence you rarely see them this side of Top Fuel. Used to see them on Rover V8 powered comp safari racers back in the day* * This...

Re: Winter Hammocking

The first thing I'd look at would be the cinched ends of the UQ: not an easy thing to get right especially if you are on your own. They want to be just snug enough to pull the material up against the hammock but not too snug. If there's a gap then it feels like there's a draught and you get Cold Bu...

Ended up carting it all in to the disabled loo (which had underfloor heating) and sleeping in there Back in the 80s when I was in the Scouts we had a camp in October at a local campsite, for the East Wight area. I did consider making one but the minimum order from Extremtextile is only a few pounds less than the cost of the Thunderfly I'd not save any money.

Plus I've made 3 tarps and 2 tarp-tents before so I like the idea that it just arrives finished

Winter Hammocking

So as not to go off-topic in the Bivi a Month thread I'll start one here to share advice for winter BAM hammocking. My original curiosity with the use of a hammock was the possibility to use sites too sloped for laying on the ground, which applies to a lot of the more out of the way places on the Is...
