Re: What's in your tool kit?

Looks like I have an average tool kit after all. Just bought a Tubolito which had lopped a whopping 220g from my total. 29+ tubes weigh a ton. A bit of a cull of some other stuff should help too. I'm toting a digi pressure gauge and a fairly massive Lezyne mini floor pump thing currently. Surely I ...

What's in your tool kit?

This is almost certainly a thread that has been bone before but... Having applied the principles of take less sh1t and spend more cash I have my kit down to a pretty light load. The only area that is available for serious weight and bulk loss is tools/spares. I reckon I carry more than average in th...

Re: WTD: SMD Serenity Net Tent

If I'm spending the cash I guess I'd like the bathtub floor as well.
It'd make the setup better in wet weather as well as bug weather.
Never seen Ali express. Maybe it's time I did...

WTD: SMD Serenity Net Tent

Long shot I know but having just been eaten alive on a trip under a Deschutes Cape I'm after a Six Moon Designs Serenity net tent.

Re: Shifter repair/service

I recently modified some Rival 22 shifters to use with a Rohbox. Apex innards are the same. The internals will come apart easily with simple/normal tools. Small posidrive and needle nose pliers. I bet getting things back in with the spring under tension is a royal faff. I have the internal parts I r...

Re: Talk to me about cargo cages...

I got some cheap thick ones on eBay for a few quid.
They are a sort of PVC material like Ortleib panniers or old school caving dry bags.
I prefer them to light bags like the Alpkit ones because they are a bit more robust and abrasion resistant. Placed low on a fork the bags are quite vulnerable.

Re: Mapping Local Trails

You can set OS grid reference as a data field on an Etrex 30 without much hassle. As I remember you need to select OS grid reference in the 'position format' setting , then add 'position' as a data field on the trip computer or dash board or both.
It's something like that anyhow

Re: Talk to me about cargo cages...

I also use Blackburn with 5L dry bags.
Never use them without a bar bag though, just as extra capacity on winter trips.
They can catch a bit on gorse and stuff but are otherwise completely fine.

Sizing advice top, thanks.
My last ones were a little tight with extra socks. Bought same size this time and they're perfect.

Re: Alternatives to Shimano XM9

If it ain't broke don't fix it....
Just pressed the button on a pair of XM9 at the pretty attractive price of £128.
Nothing else looks as good for walking in and most rides I do involve at least a bit of pushing/carrying on rough ground.

Alternatives to Shimano XM9

My ancient MTB boots are now knackered. They are Shimano something's, the previous model to XM9. I like them. They suit the riding I do, bikepacking, Lakeland HAB, Dartmoor mudplugging. I use them year round utilising proper gaiters to keep out the goo in winter. I'm shopping for boots now and wonde...

Your most inventive bike fix...

Spent sometime today recalling an MTB expedition to the Himalayas I did with a buddy a long time ago. I got talking about some of the jams we got into, crappy bridges, landslides and the like. Some of the things that I remember best were the ways we fixed my mates bike which had a habit of crapping ...

Re: Dedicated bikepacking bike... to plus or not to plus?

There is always a lot of talk about the ride quality of certain frame materials. Alloy is harsh, steel is whippy etc. Are people not just quoting what they read in reviews? Surely the biggest difference in ride quality comes from the type of tyres you run and how much air you choose to put in them. ...

Re: Gravel Bike Rim Recommendations Please!

Just bought a Halo Evaura rim.
Cost about £50 and is quite wide. Sits very well with a 40mm tyre on my CX/gravel bike.
Did a trip last weekend with two long road days and two off road days fully loaded.
It's built a nice wheel.
Evaura is for rim brakes. The Devaura is a disk version.

Re: Cycling solo in Morocco

Having cycled solo in many dodgy countries with bad reputations I'd say go for it but don't be stupid. Pretty much always people in one country have bad things to say about 'them over there' most of which is totally baseless. Try to avoid cycling after dark. Try to avoid too many exciting looking th...
