Re: Double ended dry bag - very very dull
I'm self taught on the machine. The first thing I can remember making was a sleeping bag for a Playmobile cowboy when I was about 8 maybe. It was uninsulated so maybe it was technically a bivi bag. There was also a bit of string to hold it rolled up and to the back of the saddle on his horse, so per...

Re: Double ended dry bag - very very dull
Nice work Sean - would a single ended dry bag not be lighter? It would, but ironing on the seam tape on a closed end bag is harder to do. Plus being double ended I can roll in both ends to keep the tabs central in the harness. After my recent Ridgeway trip (if you walk it go in summer or wear welli...

Double ended dry bag - very very dull
I seem to have developed a slight obsession with weight recently. In the winter I use an Alpkit 13L double ended dry bag and in the summer a MYOG 8L version in a similar fabric to the Alpkit one. A double ended dry bag is quite easy to make and the only seam that needs waterproofing is the one acros...

Re: Bivvy bag reccomendations
I've got a Borah side zip and I'm really pleased with it. Very light and a tiny pack size. The built in bug net is a good feature and it's easy to get into with a large opening. It's also got a loop which holds the bug net up if fixed to the underside of the tarp http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/...

Re: Survey on cycling related hand numbness
Filled in. I think we might be outside the norm as a user group  I have white-finger in my left little finger, diagnosed by my doctor. This can only be as a direct result of my riding as I have an office job and the numbness/loss of sensation first started to occur on long rides. It's now perma...

And the longer the trip the more that extra efficiency pays off. Or on a shorter trip it's more brews for the same amount of fuel you used to carry.

Good work there it's nice when it all fits together like that, especially when some of it is food as it means there's less to repack which helps as packing in the field never seems as easy as when at home beforehand.

Re: New stove, it's very dull though.
I shall track some down, obviously only for the pot and I won't enjoy eating the cream but I will eat it so as not to waste it  the same can't be said for when I made a cat can stove, we don't have a cat so I had to buy the cat food especially. Perhaps I chose the wrong flavour, after all I on...

I'd love to know the brand of cream that gives the right size pot to nest in the myti mug? That's the sort of thing I find exciting

If someone lends you one they can put your details, name, allergies etc. on the spot system for the sos bit. The other details for normal contacts, the mobile numbers, email address and details to send can be set up as a profile for when you use it. All but the sos message are relayed to whoever you...

Cheers, I've already got a big one so I'll pass thanks. It's a smaller one I'd like next for the TLS trips.

Hi Mart
What size is the Wildcat tapered dry bag? Is it the big or the small one?
Sean

Re: HIghland Trail 550 - 2018
Good advice, I'll fit my new tires, I'll use them for a couple of weeks beforehand to make sure they're OK. I'll pack some lithium batteries as well, I've got some unused from before I switched to rechargeable. Will it be a wet event this year? I hope not, but it's due isn't it? All winter I've been...

So, from one data set, I'd say for a five day finish you need batteries for around 100hrs of usage plus a bit just in case.

Re: HIghland Trail 550 - 2018
The batteries need to be charged externally for the eTrex. I've got 8 batteries in total at the moment - the Maplin's closing down sale has made this much better value  If I get say 25 hours a set then 4 sets is 100 hrs which if they were on for 20 hrs a day would be a 5 day finish........

So my Maxxis Forekasters might be a bit aggressive then  Perhaps instead of fitting the new ones I've already bought (don't leave maxxis purchasing to the last minute as uk stock can be problematic) I'll just leave the part worn ones on  On a different note, I'll be using my Etrex 30 fo...

Re: cramp in shoulder blade, not had that before
It could just be as a result of the amount of road riding? I get aches and pains after an hour on the road on my ss mtb but don't have any after 20 hours off road as it means I move about more, stand up more and use different muscles. Do you move your hands about on the Jones? On a road section I li...

Well done, great result. It gets so much harder to keep going every morning so it takes propper grit to keep on going to the end. Chapeau and to Mark, external time constraints really add to the stress of a long route.

Re: Nipples and tape
On some of my rims there are small holes set in the sides that don't get covered by the main wrap of tape so I've just used a short section to cover them and they work fine. You should be able to just cut a hole in the tape to change the nipple and then patch over it.

I might be the last to the party here, but I've just been on the Maplin website and they are closing down (I did know that bit as it was on the radio) and have all the stock discounted. So now is the time to stock up on lithium and/or rechargeable batteries.
