Re: Sunglasses
I wear clear cycling glasses pretty all year round for eye protection from grit, slop, bugs and cold wind. Sadly its very rare I've needed sunglasses on the bike  And a pair of Bollé safety glasses like these are as good as any "proper" clear-lens cycling glasses I've ever owned — h...

Re: WRT TLS or TTMS?
Back from Wales and missing you already  To cheer myself up, I just stripped my packs down and made a note of everything I took and everything I didn't use, and it's interesting to see how far away from TLS Nirvana I was, I think. By the end, it seems I was carrying 2.8kg of stuff that I did no...

Re: Better Battery Life?
Following my three-day jaunt on WRT, I have a data point that may (or may not) be interesting. I rode around using a Garmin 1000, which was fully charged before I left. I had it on map-view most of the time. I took an IKEA (!) 5Ah (5000) cache battery (plus a 3200 "spare", in case I had go...

Re: Thanks for a great weekend
When Wilkyboy showed up about 1030pm I thought it was going to be a get orf my land moment. Hope you found a suitable spot. Yep, right up on the top, clear view of the skies, amazing "dark sky" panorama, absolutely free from all motor noise all night — exactly what I had hoped for  ...

Re: Thanks for a great weekend
Thanks Stuart and Dee! :-bd I enjoyed that, although a feeling a bit burnt today — I'd rather that than trench foot, so I'm not complaining  As always, a Welsh mile's about three times as long as an English one, particularly a Fenland one, so my planned route was over-ambitious. Again  N...

Had a look online and not all the wings are the same it turns out. Mine is like the one below You can just make out the square sided opening on the back, there's one each end to fit the different sized nipples. I guess the one on the front might fit a mulitspline nipple? I've never had to use the s...

The wing bit is also 2 sizes of spoke key and a valve core removal tool on mine :-bd I can't see how this wing can be used to adjust spokes — I carry a Fiber Spoke anyway, which includes its own spoke key. The larger opening on the wing is exactly right for removing a valve core — thanks for the in...

Re: Better Battery Life?
Note: in my previous post I said I was using Li-On batteries, they are actually NiMH. Yep, the technology for charging NiMH compared to the more common Li-ion batteries buried in devices is different. I have no specific knowledge or experience with regard to that, nor of any switching/protection ci...

Re: Better Battery Life?
Since writing the article — and discovering the huge inefficiency of the saturation-charge phase — I have become a lot less fastidious about aiming for 100% charge in my devices, unless I'm charging direct from dynamo and don't have anything else to use the power for. 80-90% is good enough. Unfortun...

Re: Better Battery Life?
Slightly OT. For those who use a dynamo and converter to run lights or charge batteries is it advisable to disconnect the converter if you aren't actually running anything from it? I'm sure I've seen posts where people have burnt out the circuitry. If you leave it connected is it OK to have a fully...

Re: Better Battery Life?
Great info - many thanks. So could I reasonably expect to get 5 x 20% to 80% charges over a weekend out of a 10000mAh battery do you think? If you started with both fully charged then I think so, but if you're using a plus-size phone then it will be very close, because of the mahoosive battery (com...

Re: Better Battery Life?
I did a fairly broad-brush write-up a while ago for audaxers here: http://www.16inchwheels.uk/2016/04/11/powering-devices-on-long-rides/ . It's long overdue a rewrite to be more informed on what the numbers actually mean, and to include more empirical evidence. However, the interesting points for yo...

Re: This Is Not A Tour - new Audax events in memory of Mike
Re Garmin crash, common problem, turn off at 200k, turn on again, hit start, will continue the recording as one but not hit the memory hole. That's an interesting data point, different to the usual "stop + save + new recording". I'll have to give it a go — I usually switch the devices off...

Re: This Is Not A Tour - new Audax events in memory of Mike
Re Garmin crash, common problem, turn off at 200k, turn on again, hit start, will continue the recording as one but not hit the memory hole. which Garmin is that??? Many of the Edge series suffer from this — somewhere between 300 and 330km the unit will lock up. It's to do with the number of points...

Re: GPS app and best maps
Out of interest have you seen/got the 1:50k or 1:25k ? 1:50, I don't think I'd want all the detail of 1:25 on a gps screen. I use the 1:50k OS maps on my Garmin 1000 and there's plenty enough detail to navigate by off-road, even too much at that scale at times. I'll be bringing 1:50k both digital a...
