Re: Highland Trail 2015

How does this work?

"On my garmin 800 I have an sd card with maps and the route saved - that way any master reset type issues mean I still have the route available."

Sounds like a great solution, but I'm not sure how to implement...

Re: Salsa Spearfish

That's reassuring! Did you buy it in the UK? The exam question: With your experience of HTR & Cairngorm Loop races, would the Spearfish be your weapon on choice on these routes? What would be your criteria for choosing the SF over a HT? I have always preferred the lightweight option, but startin...

Re: titanium frames

Another Travers 29er here; so far it's been pretty good. It certainly has a lot of give in the rear, so much the tyre keeps hitting my seat pack on descents, despite a good 4+ cm clearance when static! Longer legs or shorter cranks might help extend the seat post... They are definitely not all made ...

Re: Salsa Spearfish

Thanks for the advice. The new Spearfish frame has a PF BB92 for 24mm axle, same as my last bike, which took an absurd amount of mallet bashing to remove when it prematurely died!

Salsa Spearfish

Does anybody here have any bikepacking experience on this bike - post 2014 version? It has a very good track record in both the AZT and CTR races (more to do with rider sponsorship I expect); do you think it would be right for the HT550? It is somewhat heavier than a HT, and the shock limits space f...

SRAM XX1 Chainset swap

Want to swap my 175mm for a170mm, in the PF GXP BB flavour. It's done exactly 4 long days of riding and has an unused ring - 34t, I think.
I would consider a similar lightweight chainset in 165-170mm, with a 24mm axle (doesn't have to be GXP, but must be BB92 PF compatible)
Will sell it I can't swap.

There is a lot of rain forecast for the next week. Are there any river crossings that are likely to become particularly dangerous?

Re: West Country Way (Devon C2C) GPX track?

That looks great, and the extra leg over the Quantocks to Taunton will not only provide some great trails but also ensure a train ride back to Plymouth. On a similar idea, has any body seen a gpx for the 'fort to fort' challenge, run last year by mrb epics as a 3 day ride from Exeter over Dartmoor t...

Re: Travel insurance

I've used BMC for the last decade, but shocked by how much the premium has escalated in that time; about 300% increase. I had an accident mountain biking in Canada resulting in spinal surgery then aeromed, which they arranged and paid for, probably $100k worth of expenses, and no qualms I was very m...

Best Ever Saddle

I know the answer to this is 'whatever fits your own ass best', but, is there any concensus on what saddle is best for the long haul? I've tried a few, with mixed results, and still fear unbearable arse pain on long multi-day trips!

Re: Bargain Alert Thread

Just looked at this link to Wiggle and it's full price to this potential customer. After my last Gore soft-shell jacket fell apart, and they failed to honour the warranty, it would have to be at least 75% off to get me buying!

Re: A snip at only $2000

When my Lefty required mending it came back from the UK importers with a completely new fault! Fortunately TF Tuned did a cracking job fixing the problem in the damping circuit and charged it direct to the the Euro importers under warranty. Basic maintenance is straightforward - re-setting the trave...

Re: A snip at only $2000

Makes a Cannondale Lefty look good value; a fork I both love & hate. When it works it's great, but it does take a bit of looking after and don't get it wet! I think one of the early TD winners used a Lefty.

Re: waterproof trousers

The OMM pants are great for walking, comfy and light, but not robust enough for riding - the arse will wear quickly, and the taping on the seams doesn't last well.

Interesting stuff, but from what I read of this Rohloff pseudoscience it confirms that the internal gears are relatively less efficient in the lower 7 gears, unless the comparative dérailleur system is filthy or worn. The expense of the new system is considerable, but balanced against reduced runnin...

Re: Bottom Brackets

I still struggle to get my head round the wholly unnecessary plethora of BBs available now! My current dilemma is what to replace the knackered SRAM press fit GXP BB with on my crappy plastic frame. As I need to buy a new crankset anyway(165 or shorter), it doesn't need to be GXP comapatible, if the...
