Re: Winter Hammocking

OK, there's a few on here with (much) more hammocking experience than me but here's my 2p'worth... I wouldn't *wear* your down jacket but lay it on top of you that way you get the most loft - if the hood's detachable then do so and wear it on its own. I have a 45nrth balaclava with large neck cowl t...

Re: EU bike shop charges!

No, no... I'm not trying to dodge the VAT. Bob, they didn't deliver and I paid for DHL but it was Parcelforce that left me the note or they'd send it back. I'm hoping there must surely be a way of avoiding the processing fee, like that £12 Parcelforce whacked. Idnever think about dodging thw tax/VA...

Re: EU bike shop charges!

Shaf, the VAT rules changed EU wide prior to brexit as a result the UK has *exactly* the same rules as the EU except that HMRC talks about a £135 limit rather than €150 in the EU documentation. Below €150/£135 the seller is responsible for collecting and then passing on the VAT to the relevant autho...

Re: Bivvy a month 2023.

I've only just realised why they are called under quilts  I wondered how they gave any warmth when you lay on them  Can you not just attach them to the underside of the hammock? I've probably still misunderstood. You don't lay *on* them - they are slung *under* the hammock, i.e. the hamm...

Re: Bivvy a month 2023.

I'm trying out a new underquilt for the hammock so drove to mum's as I could bring enough kit to stay warm if the quilt isn't up to it, unlike my BAM where I woke up shivering  The general rule of thumb for underquilts is to use one that's rated about 5C lower than your expected temperature us...

The Mk6 Stooge is out. Apologies if it's been mentioned already. There's a review at https://bikepacking.com/bikes/stooge-mk6-review/ Not sure if 4.8kg for frame and fork is heavy - my Solaris with carbon fibre fork is about 3kg - the review quotes a finished build at 14kg.

Re: Contents / bike cover for many, many bikes..

Ours is through Swinton. For contents cover we only have to list bikes above £2000 in value. Total contents cover is £80k with high value items (i.e. bikes) limited to £24k. Can't find the actual underwriter. The bike cover is for new replacement not current value. I've just been looking at the sche...

I can't remember who it was (Paul someone or other who was an American economist) who came up with the core principle behind modern capitalism - "You need to persuade people that their wants are really needs". I.e. "I want a 50" widescreen TV", "Do you need one?", ...

You got me searching (digitally I'm afraid) for the maker of the tall clock in our living room, there's no date that I can see on the clock face. One George Bownes(s) of Lancaster. Seems he was working in the 1870s so ours is around 150yrs old. I think there's quite a few of us on here that grew up ...

Re: BB200 2023

DNSs are a tricky one - as evidenced by Shaf and Paul there are genuine reasons why some people don't turn up. Pre-entry, especially when it's on-line, do seem to encourage a "let's just enter" mentality and I'm not sure that will ever change. A local organiser of fell races simply adds 10...

Just seen that Javi did the Badger Divide and posted a photo of a locked gate "due to a hole in a bridge" - https://www.strava.com/activities/10171952069 from the trace it looks like he headed back down to Loch Rannoch then came back up through the forest.

I'd tend to agree, but I think the blue badge is a nice "consolation prize" for someone missing out on the black badge (which could easily happen due to mechanicals, etc). It's also a good target for someone who absolutely needs a nap and is not able to carry on through the night. I think...

Re: Dealing with the damp

Can't help with the eczema, not had any experience of it. Condensation is a tricky one as there's a lot of variables. Sometimes the air is simply too humid to avoid it but location, ground cover, even soil type have a bearing on what you'll experience. Generally a camp under some sort of cover, whet...

Re: New bike day (2 years in the waiting) Alhamdulillah!

Shaf, there are standard tables for matching the width of the tyre to the rim width. Do a search for ETRTO charts. I've seen figures suggesting tyre to rim width ideal ratio of 1.8 - 1 so a 35mm rim's best fit is: 35 * 1.8 = 63mm; 63/25.4 = 2.48" Of course then you need to ensure that such a ty...
