Used to ride a Nicolas Helius CC to good effect until it went AWOL
Pretty sure any XC/trail bike would work well enough on the right terrain.

Re: Like a Brooks C15 but not a C15

What about a leather Brooks. Mine, like countless others are still working after an age. I use Proofride regularly top side and bottom and have no issues. After a few days in the pissing wet they get a bit saggy but all is good in the world otherwise. I may just have a black Swift titanium that coul...

Re: Sleeping mat options

My experience is that a deflated Prolight is warmer and more comfortable than a Numo. I bought a Numo a few years back in an effort to save weight and bulk over my Prolight. It was on eBay shortly afterwards. I’ve ended up with a second hand Exped Synmat 7 and am pleased with it. It’s comfy enough a...

Re: Bottle cage for wider bottles

Thanks for the replies. In the end i’ve managed to get the bottle into a Profile Kage with some light modifications. It’s a bit of a squeeze to get it in and i’m not convinced it’s gonna hold tightly even so. I’ll just need to ride to check it out.

Re: Bottle cage for wider bottles

Blackburn Tallboy will take a 24 oz can if you remove the sleeve. I believe a 24 oz can has an OD of just under 3.5", so it might be a reasonable fit. Yeah but, no, but. Dimensions look great - 82.5mm internal width - but it’s made by Blackburn. Blackburn’s parent company is a big financial su...

Re: Bottle cage for wider bottles

I use a Topeak Modula XL to hold a 1 Litre Sigg bottle under my downtube. It's designed for standard 1.5 l plastic water bottles found everywhere so it needs cutting down for the rubber strap to fit around the neck of a Sigg bottle but thats an easy job. https://www.bikeinn.com/ciclismo/topeak-modu...

Good try. Not seen one of those. Unfortunately it’s designed around a 93mm bottle - Nalgene or Klean Kanteen 40oz.
I do have a KK40oz but it may be too wide for the space.
I wanna make the Sigg work because the spout has a decent full sized cover.

I thought that but the various module cages adjust smaller from 73-74mm max and I don’t think the xl version is what I need.

The bottle in question is a 1L Sigg WM

Bottle cage for wider bottles

I’m interested in recommendations for a bottle cage to hold a wider than average water bottle. The bottle is metal and is approx 80mm wide. The majority of bike bottles are 70mm and cages are designed around this. None in my collection (Specialized side entry, Profile Kate, Specialized Rib and a few...

Re: Tarp ridgeline - what's that about?

What's with the folding? Down that path lies material damage and leaking tarps. Potentially. Again this is probably a big and heavy vs small and flimsy thing. My enormous DD Ultralight (product designers humour?) has been folded at least 30 times per year for 4 or 5 years. That’s No damage or leaks...

Re: Tarp ridgeline - what's that about?

On a large/heavy trad bushcraft type tarp the ridgeline very much helps get a taut pitch. Either under it or over it using the hang loops. The weight of the tarp is supported on or by the line. My preference is line over as that goes some way to mitigating rain running down the line and under the ta...

Thanks. Turned autopause off this morning so was able to work out the moving vs overall average question.
Not sure the 530 is capable of displaying both metrics simultaneously. More fiddling needed.

Re: So: why are racks & panners out of fashion?

I didn’t say panniers outperform soft bags off road but the contention that you can’t off road with panniers is a nonsense. In very tight undergrowth or deep ruts you definitely have problems but in the majority of situations that you can pedal panniers are ok. It’s hard to carry a bike with pannier...

as noted less practical and heavier Heavier - definitely Less practical? - I beg to differ. It’s all relative to your needs and the trip you are equipping for. For a short MTB trip over rough terrain soft bags rule. For most other uses panniers would be more practical. They are easier to pack - mor...
