I don't know if they're any good but Rab Element 1 and 2 (tarp/shaped tarp) are on heavy discount at Sportshoes.

Re: New Bike Gear Out And Due Out...
In general I’d agree with the concern that adding a built in converter to the hub is just another “black box” to go wrong. On the other hand SON stuff is well designed and well made. I don’t know another company that stands so squarely behind their products and has a lifetime commitment to keeping t...

Re: New Bike Gear Out And Due Out...
Spotted at Eurobike by _owenwheels on Instagram ( https://www.instagram.com/p/Cf-z-tIsZDi/ ) . SON have a dynohub that supplies DC rather than AC. Which would eliminate the need for converters to charge USB devices, but presumably require lights that run on DC rather than AC. No indication of when i...

This is probably the most detailed and authoritative resource:

You need to join the association to access it. but the titles of the routes may give some useful guidance.

Re: Parking in Abergavenny
Cor Avenue Road looks lovely. Very quiet and peaceful. Every time I'm in the area I make sure to stop for a bit at Abergavenny. I've heard that the town was/is a bit rough, but I find it charming whenever I'm there. The town's had its ups and downs but definitely experiencing an up right now. The c...

Re: Parking in Abergavenny
The Byefield Lane car park in the centre of town off Tudor Street is free any day except Tuesday. I don't think there's a prohibition on overnight parking but can check for you tomorrow. On street parking can get a bit aggro around the train station, and close to the primary schools and in the centr...

Re: Viewranger being discontinued.
I'm farily happy with mine. Had at least half of England and a quart of Wales worth of OS in viewranger. Got the transfer code over to Outdoor Active. In the maps icon when making a route, it has a blanked out OS button but when I click it I get the full UK in OS maps. Can then make my routes. One ...

Re: Viewranger being discontinued.
Having tried most of the apparent alternatives to Viewranger and not found any of them to be very good, this week I chanced upon the Topo GPS app. Seems pretty good - you can buy individual OS squares, or get an annual sub for £24.99 which covers Explorer and Landranger and provides for downloading ...

Re: Where the bridleway ends...
The one ROW oddity that amuses me locally is it's not possible to legally cycle to the start of the Millenium Trail / NCN 55. If you follow the sign posted route you get to the end of a road and then you're told to dismount and then walk the 300m or so down a gravel road and then dodge through a co...

Re: Where the bridleway ends...
I encounter more and more of these, and I am increasingly taking the view that if it's fit for riding then I'll ride it, whether a BW or FP. Only exceptions being trails in parkland and the like if they are very busy with pedestrians. I feel very strongly that natural justice is on our side, that th...

With the appropriate adaptor, he should be able to backup a memory card to a phone or tablet.
Or get him one of those rugged, waterproof cases for multiple SD / microSD cards. Once inside there it's less easily mislaid.

I should add that I've never tried the S2S folding mugs. They don't look very sensible - the Swedish 'Wildo' ones work quite well, and are much cheaper. I'll stand by the folding bowl - the base is surprisingly useful as a cutting board.

Re: The Old Chalk Way
People have been using bikes to explore the British Isles since the 1870s, so there's very little 'new under the sun'. As long those hawking 'new' route ideas give a little nod to the generations that have come before us, I think all is well. Sometimes a refresh and a rebrand is all that's needed to...

If you can't get a mattress protector etc for for free, the CTC bike bags are £12 and made of fairly thick plastic sheet, should be good for a few years at least. https://www.wiggle.co.uk/ctc-cycling-uk ... c-bike-bag

Re: Bearfoot cycling shoes: such a thing?
I'd agree that clipping in is the opposite of the barefoot ethos. Better to go for a barefoot type shoe and a grippy flat pedal - ideally one with a concave platform, to match the shape of the ball of the foot. Then you can at least vary the position of your foot on the pedal to vary the position an...

Obviously none of my curmudgeonliness applies to anyone driving a celebrated MTB route in a pair of 2CVs, and stopping for what looks like a picnic. Guess where?

Re: Watkins Way
Lots of great lanes riding in Herefordshire. Call me an old curmudgeon, but I do find it sad that these sorts of routes are being marketed primarily as a driving route, with a bullet point saying 'and you can do it by bike too if you want'. North Coast 500 and Wild Atlantic Way are primarily markete...

I bought a Lumix TZ 95 (I think, a couple of hundred quid anyway) and unless you were needing to use the extremes of the Zoom lens it was worse in every way compared to either my Huawei Mate 10 Pro or Samsung A71. I've recently bought a Samsung S21 Ultra. It's waterproof, has a proper 3x and 10x op...

Aye, Jack has it. For low light, my Pixel 6 is amazing. Astrophotography is a thing, with clear shots of stars and the milky way if that's your thing. Zoom lets it down, though again there is some clever use of microchip power to enhance the image quality. The only shots I'm not getting, and where ...

Re: Cameras
Yeah, I'd agree that a modern phone camera equals or beats almost all point and shoot cameras. Where phones aren't quite there yet is with zoom (phones have fixed lenses, any zoom feature is just a digital crop) and low light situations (phone cameras have quite small sensors). Phones are often much...
